Book Description
Excerpt from The True Religion: Being the Grounds of the Catholic Faith The object of the following pages is to give in a brief space an outline of the grounds of the Catholic religion. The argument pre supposes three things: (i) Belief in the existence of God, the Creator of the universe and Of man (2) the spirituality of the human soul and (3) the validity of the pro cesses of human reason. The first two can be proved (see Bibliography at the end), although considerations of space forbid their treatment here; the third is not capable of proof, for any proof must assume and involve the conclusion. Book Description
Excerpt from The True Catholicism: Revealing the Breadth and Comprehensiveness of the New Christian Church To present a clear idea of this Catholicism, and to illustrate the subject by copious extracts from the Writings of the divinely illumined Sweden borg, is the main purpose of the present work. And the author cannot doubt that it will meet with a cordial response from all those who have caught something of the loving, large and catholic spirit of the Divine Master, and who are seeking to imbue the hearts of others with this same spirit. But bigots of whatever name or creed, all nar row-minded and conceited sectaries to whatever church-organization they may belong, all who are strongly wedded to the faith-alone or doctrine-alone theory, and who doubt about the salvation of anywho do not think or believe very nearly if not pre cisely as they do - all such will read this book with no interest and derive from it no satisfaction. Very few of this class will deem it worth reading at all; and most of them, if they attempt to read it, will probably turn from it with disgust and loathing before they shall have reached the sixth chapter. But it is confidently believed that the book will receive a warm welcome from all broad-minded and open-hearted Christians; and the author humbly trusts it may encourage and strengthen them in their efforts to promote a larger tolera tion, a truer charity and a higher unity than has hitherto prevailed; and possibly lead some to a careful investigation of the Writings so often quoted and so highly commended in these pages. Book Description
Excerpt from The Revelation of the Holy Spirit Goethe says wisely that the battle of faith and infidelity is the one momentous issue in human history; all other issues are subordinate to this. But faith in one point of religion facilitates faith in all religion. Truth is a whole, and every part of it is indissolubly linked to other parts. It is possible, then, that a plea for the doctrine of the Holy Spirit may possess some slight value in Christian Apolo getics. If it were so in the instance of this book, that would be my deepest joy, my best reward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian and Catholic The professional proselytizer, as we know the class, is a repulsive character. He studies the art of injecting doubts into devout minds, of playing on the weaknesses and vanities of his proposed con verts. He exaggerates the discords within their church, the contrariant opinions, the lack of discip line. Sometimes he cajoles, sometimes he seeks to terrify, sometimes he tries to influence by social ad vantages, sometimes he seeks to take souls captive by subtle sophisms. He is apt to be self-deceived as well as a deceiver, while asserting that he is working for the greater glory of God. In reality he is doing what our Lord condemned in the Pharisees. They compassed heaven and earth to make proselytes, but failed grievously in making them true children of God. For themselves and their converts the result was just the Opposite. It is right to try to help our brothers who are in honest doubt, just in the same spirit as we would be glad for them to help us when in need. It is right if our motive is to aid any Christian soul to come into closer union with Christ. Even should any one be lieve that his church was the only true one, yet to work for it in the same spirit one works for the success of an earthly object is to belie its character. We must work, not for any personal gain but as Christ did. Our guiding pole-star must be the good of others' souls. If our own words are found of help to any, enabling them to know better God's Will, in whatever way He leads them, may they have grace to follow it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Catholic Priest Others shake their heads with an air Of majesty, as if they would say: how can we get over the Pope - over the hierarchy of the Catholic Church? Like a divine stigma, the world's hatred is impressed on the brow Of the Pope, Of the bishops and priests of the Church. The spirit Of the world - the Spirit of falsehood and Of negation hates the Pope the Vicar of Christ; it hates all our Lord's true miii isters - the Catholic bishops and priests -with demoniacal hatred. Why? Be cause they are the palladium Of truth, and of public and private morality; the root and bond Of charity and of faith.
