Book Description
In the movie The Big Sleep, Bogart as Philip Marlowe follows a trail of decadence and murder on the dark side of L.A. But even the seamy underside of the city of angels pales in comparison to the freak show found by undercover U.S. narcotics agent Bob Clark . . . in The Carnival of Death. Clark’s investigation begins with cocaine and leads to cold-blooded murder—the discovery of one, and then another, headless corpse. Who is behind the slaughter? Are the killings tied to the drug traffic? Or is a deeper, darker, and even more sinister conspiracy unfolding in the carnival? There are plenty of distractions—bright lights and beautiful girls—but Clark better find the murderers of the midway fast. Because the next head that rolls could very well be his own. In 1934, while living in New York, the heart of the publishing industry, Hubbard struck up a friendship with the city’s medical examiner—a relationship that started his education in undetectable crime and provided him with authoritative clinical background for his detective stories. Also includes the mystery The Death Flyer, in which a man and woman find themselves trapped on a ghost train and bound for a deadly crash . . . unless they can find a way to derail fate and cheat death—on the fly. “Roars to life.” —Library Journal

Book Description
The detective is deep undercover at Shreve's Mammoth Carnival, when he discovers first one and then another headless body. While others believe the gruesome murders are solved after four tribal headhunters working for the show suddenly disappear, Bob Clark suspects someone else is the real killer. When he finds himself seized by the very same headhunters, Clark sincerely hopes his hunch is right, since the point of a very sharp knife is aimed at his neck! The Death Flyer: Can history be reversed to save a beautiful girl on the ghost train? Long before the Source Code movie with Jake Gyllenhaal, Jim Bellamy boards a ghost train, screaming through the night as he tries to save the life of a young lady who died in its wreckage ten years ago. A love story of an impossible nature, Jim tries to reverse time, on a train of phantoms long forgotten, yet stuck in time. “...consistently engaging, over-the-top performances that complement the colorful characters and equally vibrant carnival setting. Particularly entertaining are occasional screams of horror (from the women actors), a nice contrast to Meskimen’s interpretation of the solid federal agent. For pulp-fiction fans.” —Booklist

Book Description
In 1911, the operators of Coney Island's Luna Park premiered a miniature, radically banked racetrack for staged automobile races that seemed to defy gravity. For a fee, patrons would watch from the perimeter of the 85-foot wooden saucer as daredevil drivers raced on the steep angle of the tiny track. The attraction created a sensation and was quickly copied with a show that featured motorcycle riders performing breathtaking stunts. When portable versions were made available, every traveling carnival owner in the United States rushed to have one. Motordromes with perfectly vertical walls soon followed, which permitted riders on their Indian motorcycles to climb, sometimes to a height of 20 feet, with nothing but centrifugal force between them and a trip to the trauma ward. And when full-grown lions were added to pursue riders in the arena, no one could resist buying a ticket! The "Wall of Death," a name these shows received in 1917, remained a staple attraction on American carnival midways until the 1970s.

Book Description
"Teresa Lupo always envied her Aunt Sofia, whose adventurous life is in stark contrast to Teresa's by-the-book career as a police pathologist. But when Sofia vanishes in Venice on the eve of Carnival, thoughtful, methodical Teresa is the only person with a prayer of tracking her down. The only clues to Sofia's whereabouts are a mysterious letter, a bouquet of flowers, and a series of short stories by an unknown author, stories in which Sofia and Teresa inexplicably appear. The bizarre narratives form a complex puzzle that Teresa can solve only by immersing herself in the art and history of Venice and the fantastic spectacle of Carnival. But the deeper she ventures into the shadowy world behind the masks, the more Teresa comes to realize that in this enchanted, Byzantine city, nothing is what it seems."--P. [4] of cover.

Book Description
"James Shelby Downard may be the most controversial conspiracy theorist of the 20th century. In "King-Kill 33 [degrees]," Downard notoriously laid out the involvement of Freemasonry in the assassination of President Kennedy. Marilyn Manson wrote a song based on Downard's essay." "The Carnivals of Life and Death is Downard's autobiographical account of his early years in the South, when Ku Klux Klanners and Freemasons, including President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, pulled him into many strange and violent affairs." "Adam Parfrey, who introduced Downard to readers in his Apocalypse Culture compilations, provides the Foreword, based on his personal experiences with the reclusive and now-deceased investigator."--BOOK JACKET.
