Book Description
Excerpt from Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 44: July-December 1923 The diagram above shows the relative size of a gear and a belt drive of the same capacity. Also the gears would only be about one-third as wide as the pulleys. The saving in space is great. Gear drives are safer than belts because on account of their small size it is much easier to guard them effectively. The guards on a gear can frequently be made to form a complete enclosure containing an oil bath. This will promote the efficiency of the drive to such an extent as to be a paying investment of itself, so that the safety guard really costs nothing extra. As a rule gears are more durable than belts, and. For the service they perform, are far cheaper in the long run. There is much less load on the bearings with gears, for belts only transmit power in proportion to the difference between the tensions on the tight and slack side. There is no fire risk with gears like that. Arising in dusty locations with belts, from static sparks or friction from rubbing against guards. The saving of valuable space by the use of a com pact gear drive is often of prime importance. Gears, especially rawhide pinions, or in large sizes the her ringbone gear drives, lend themselves especially well to the individual electric motor drive in industrial plants. Gears are more efficient than belts. Due to the ah sence of slip and creep. Creep is always present in belts and slip usually so. With gears there is no slip. There fore no loss. The best way to get rid of your belting troubles is to replace the belts, wherever possible, with gears and plan to use gears on new drives.
