Book Description
Presenting an in-depth discussion of the surgical management of fractures and dislocations of the talus and calcaneus, this text utilizes both an up-to-date review of the literature, providing a broad understanding of the topic, and a case-based approach, delving into the finer details of how to care for these injuries and providing an outline of the specific surgical techniques that make anatomic repair of these injuries possible. Beginning with a review of the general principles of foot trauma care, the chapters then proceed thematically to cover various fractures of the talus, tarsal dislocations, fractures of the calcaneus, and post-traumatic care and reconstruction. There is a focus throughout on the care of the post-traumatic sequelae of these injuries, as these frequently lead to chronic issues about the foot and ankle. Amply illustrated with figures, radiographs and intra-operative photographs, Fractures and Dislocations of the Talus and Calcaneus will be an excellent resource for orthopedic, podiatric and trauma surgeons and residents.

Book Description
The book Features of the Calcaneus gives an insight into the current state of treatment of calcaneal fractures. The calcaneus or "os calcis" is the most commonly fractured bone in the foot, in addition to being the largest, and has a major role in the biomechanics of the whole foot. There is heated debate as to whether operative versus nonoperative surgery is beneficial for the patient suffering from calcaneus fractures. Surgically, there exist two approaches to treat calcaneal fractures like the extensile approaches and minimally invasive techniques. The content of the book evolves from the basic understanding of the anatomy of the calcaneus, to fracture patterns, the mechanism of injury, and nonoperative and operative fixation options. There are chapters, which talk about radiology, patient selection, surgical exposures, and rehabilitation, which would help the trauma surgeon doing all kinds of fracture surgeries. Chapters on primary arthrodesis, minimally invasive surgery, malunion corrections and role of arthroscopy are meant for the specialist foot surgeons. And, of course, there are specific chapters, which discuss how outcomes are measured, and how patients are rehabilitated. Perhaps, one of the most important chapters reviews the evidence-based medicine for calcaneal fracture management. On the whole, the book serves as a reference for all matters related to calcaneal fractures.

Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of an historic sympo sium, the first joint symposium of the Austrian, German and Swiss Trauma Associations and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association of North America. In an effort to bring Euro pean and North American trauma surgeons closer together and foster a free and productive exchange of ideas, these associations chose the meeting of the Austrian, German, and Swiss trauma associations, which was held in Vienna in May of 1991, as the occasion for their first joint session. The Austrian Trauma Association, led by its President, Professor Heinz Kuderna, was the host. The joint symposium of the European and the North American trauma associations, conducted in English, was held concurrently with the regular meeting of the AGS, conducted in German. In order to explore and compare the current concepts in trauma on the two continents, the organizing committee felt that the discussion should focus on an area full of challenge and controversy. Thus the major fractures of the pilon, the talus, and the os calcis were chosen as the topics of discus sion. Each subject was introduced by two keynote speakers, one from Europe and one from North America, who were chosen by their respective trauma associations on the basis of their expertise and distinguished contributions. These presentations were then followed by five or six invited shorter presentations on the subject. At the end of each session, the presenters formed a panel, debated controversial points, and answered questions from the audience.

Evidence-Based Orthopedics is an up-to-date review of the best evidence for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of orthopedic conditions. Covering orthopedic surgery as well as pre- and post-operative complications, this comprehensive guide provides recommendations for implementing evidence-based practice in the clinical setting. Chapters written by leading clinicians and researchers in the field are supported by tables of evidence that summarize systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials. In areas where evidence is insufficient to recommend a practice, summaries of the available research are provided to assist in decision-making. This fully revised new edition reflects the most recent evidence using the approved evidence-based medicine (EBM) guidelines and methodology. The text now places greater emphasis on GRADE—a transparent framework for developing and presenting summaries of evidence—to allow readers to easily evaluate the quality of evidence and the strength of recommendations. The second edition offers a streamlined presentation and an improved standardized format emphasizing how evidence in each chapter directly affects clinical decisions. Incorporating a vast amount of new evidence, Evidence-Based Orthopedics: Features thoroughly revised and updated content, including a new chapter on pediatric orthopedics and new X-ray images Provides the evidence base for orthopedic surgery as well as pediatric orthopedics and orthopedic conditions requiring medical treatment Covers the different methods for most orthopedic surgical procedures, such as hip replacements, arthroscopy, and knee replacements Helps surgeons and orthopedic specialists achieve a uniform optimum standard through a condition-based approach Aligns with internationally accepted guidelines and best health economic principles Evidence-Based Orthopedics is an invaluable resource for orthopedic specialists, surgeons, trauma surgeons, trainees, and medical students.
