The survey data are for an N2 beam with a kinetic energy per molecule of 1.3 ev, and two Ar beams of 1.4 and 2.2 ev. The spreading angles of these beams are of the order of 1 degree. The development of an intermittent target beam system for use in conjunction with the CAL shock-tube-driven molecular beam is reported. The beam is 1 inch in diameter and has a density of approximately 4 x 10 to the 12th particles/cu cm. A room-temperature source is used. The operation of a mass spectrometer in the environment of a 2.14 ev argon beam has also been studied and it has been found necessary to employ extensive shielding of the instrument from residual ionization, radiation and background scattering.
