Book Description
In 1928 New York native Muriel Earley Sheppard moved with her mining engineer husband to the Toe River Valley -- an isolated pocket in North Carolina between the Blue Ridge and Iron Mountains. Sheppard began visiting her neighbors and forming friendships in remote coves and rocky clearings, and in 1935 her account of life in the mountains -- Cabins in the Laurel -- was published. The book included 128 striking photographs by the well-known Chapel Hill photographer, Bayard Wootten, a frequent visitor to the area. The early reviews of Cabins in the Laurel were overwhelmingly positive, but the mountain people -- Sheppard's friends and subjects -- initially felt that she had portrayed them as too old-fashioned, even backward. As novelist John Ehle shows in his foreword, though, fifty years have made a huge difference, and the people of the Toe River Valley have been among its most affectionate readers. This new large-format edition, which makes use of many of Wootten's original negatives, will introduce Sheppard's words and Wootten's photography to a whole new generation of readers -- in the Valley and beyond.

Book Description
A National Book Award Longlist title! "A wondrous book, wise and wild and deeply true." —Kelly Barnhill, Newbery Medal-winning author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon "This is one of those books that haunts you long after you read it. Thought-provoking and magical." —Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson series In the tradition of modern-day classics like Sara Pennypacker's Pax and Lois Lowry's The Giver comes a deep, compelling, heartbreaking, and completely one-of-a-kind novel about nine children who live on a mysterious island. On the island, everything is perfect. The sun rises in a sky filled with dancing shapes; the wind, water, and trees shelter and protect those who live there; when the nine children go to sleep in their cabins, it is with full stomachs and joy in their hearts. And only one thing ever changes: on that day, each year, when a boat appears from the mist upon the ocean carrying one young child to join them—and taking the eldest one away, never to be seen again. Today’s Changing is no different. The boat arrives, taking away Jinny’s best friend, Deen, replacing him with a new little girl named Ess, and leaving Jinny as the new Elder. Jinny knows her responsibility now—to teach Ess everything she needs to know about the island, to keep things as they’ve always been. But will she be ready for the inevitable day when the boat will come back—and take her away forever from the only home she’s known? "A unique and compelling story about nine children who live with no adults on a mysterious island. Anyone who has ever been scared of leaving their family will love this book" (from the Brightly.com review, which named Orphan Island a best book of 2017).

Book Description
An Exquisite Seasonal Tasting Menu from the Heart of South Philly Laurel, the first book from restaurateur and Top Chef winner Nicholas Elmi, promises to be as engrossing and delicious as its restaurant namesake, a culinary stronghold in South Philly. Elmi's French background and training informed Laurel from the start, but Laurel is a true American restaurant with a modern feel. The acclaimed nine-course tasting menu is unmatched in Philadelphia. Elmi does seasonality just right. Fall brings Apple-Yuzu Consommé, Marinated Trout Roe, and Bitter Greens. Winter serves up Bourbon-Glazed Grilled Lobster, Crunchy Grains, and Apple Blossom, Spring is evidenced by Black Sea Bass, Peas, and Rhubarb Summer is distilled in Marigold-Compressed Kohlrabi, Buckwheat, and Cured Egg. The book is also a letter of gratitude to the restaurant's suppliers, whose work colors every dish they serve. Each chapter is a full nine-course tasting menu with accompanying cocktail, and almost as delicious on the page as the meal itself.

Book Description
A “richly anecdotal” account of the secluded LA neighborhood’s legendary music scene, a tale of groupies, cocaine, and California dreaming (Salon). Finalist, SCBA Book Award for Nonfiction A Los Angeles Times Bestseller In the late sixties and early seventies, an impromptu collection of musicians colonized a eucalyptus-scented canyon deep in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and melded folk, rock, and savvy American pop into a sound that conquered the world as thoroughly as the songs of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had before them. Decades later, the music made in Laurel Canyon continues to pour from radios, earbuds, and concert stages around the world. In Laurel Canyon, veteran journalist Michael Walker draws on interviews with those who were there to tell the inside story of this unprecedented gathering of some of the era’s leading musical lights—including Joni Mitchell; Jim Morrison; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; John Mayall; the Mamas and the Papas; Carole King; the Eagles; and Frank Zappa, to name just a few—who turned Los Angeles into the music capital of the world and forever changed the way popular music is recorded, marketed, and consumed. “An exhaustively researched and richly anecdotal book that will fascinate both rock aficionados and cultural historians.” —Salon “Captures all the magic and lyricism of an almost mythological geographical spot in the history of pop music . . . the story of a more melodious time in rock and roll where the great talents of the ‘60s and ‘70s cloistered together in a sort of enchanted valley populated by an all-star cast of characters.” —Steven Gaines, author of Philistines at the Hedgerow

Book Description
This is a channeled book, created to share Universal Knowledge about who you are, how to create your reality, and the miracles that will unfold once you start living from the truth of who you are. The knowledge is presented through Laurel, a group of non-physical teachers. "Who do you think you are? Do you know who you truly are? Most likely who you believe yourself to be at this moment is a very limited edition of who you could be. Most likely who you think you are is someone a lot less than who you truly are. Most likely you have some limiting definitions about you, created by your Persona. And that is all right! We just want you to know that if you do ever decide you want more, to be more, there is a way for this to happen. If you ever decide to go for your dreams and make them come true, that is entirely possible. There is a reality out there for you, waiting for you to inhabit it, and that reality is all you could ever desire and then some. It is all there waiting for you, created by your wants and needs, your desires and dreams. Your life of contrast has created this paradise for you, and all that's missing is you. However wonderful your life is at this moment, know it can get infinitely better. However great you think you now are, know that you are infinitely more. However far down in the darkness you might be now, know that there is a way out and you can climb it anytime. Your destiny is up to you, but you are meant to be and live in magnificence and greatness, to live with ease and joy, every day of your existence. You are a magical, magnificent creator, and once you accept this your life will blossom. The greatness that you are is waiting for your discovery, and the greatest gift of all, the reason you came and your deepest desire is the discovery of who you really are. We would like to show you the way. It is with honor and joy that we guide you to the discovery of YOU. Thank you for allowing us in."- Laurel -
