Book Description
Excerpt from The Bold Frontier Preacher: A Portraiture of Rev. William Cravens, of Virginia Many years ago, I heard of the fame of Virginia's distinguished hero, Rev. William Cravens. Tales of his courage, of his valor, of his chivalric acts, of his deeds of daring worthy of the days of martyrs, and it awoke within me an ardent desire to know more concerning him. For more than twelve years I have been trying to learn his history, and rescue from oblivion facts that would soon be lost forever. Book Description
William "Billy" Cravens was unlike anything the Virginia frontier had ever seen. Once a fierce drinker and brawler, Cravens converted to Christianity and became a traveling Methodist preacher who – if the situation called for it – administered severe physical punishment to those foolish enough to call him out.Cravens (1766-1826) was equally fearless in the pulpit. He was passionate in his hatred of slavery and used the pulpit to routinely heap abuse on both the institution and slaveholders alike. This 1869 biography by the Rev. J.B. Wakeley paints a lively portrait of this hellfire and brimstone Methodist preacher and, in the process, gives us a rare glimpse into what life was like along the Virginia frontier in the early 1800s. Long out of print, this revived edition of "The Bold Frontier Preacher" is a valuable addition to the canon of works memorializing America's pioneers.

Book Description
America, beginning as a small group of devout Puritan settlers, ultimately became the richest, most powerful Empire in the history of the world, but having reached that point, is now in a process of implosion and decay. This book, inspired by Frankfurt School Critical Theory, especially Erich Fromm, offers a unique historical, cultural and characterological analysis of American national character and its underlying psychodynamics. Specifically, this analysis looks at the persistence of Puritan religion, as well as the extolling of male toughness and America's unbridled pursuit of wealth. Finally, its self image of divinely blessed exceptionalism has fostered vast costs in lives and wealth. But these qualities of its national character are now fostering both a decline of its power and a transformation of its underlying social character. This suggests that the result will be a changing social character that enables a more democratic, tolerant and inclusive society, one that will enable socialism, genuine, participatory democracy and a humanist framework of meaning. This book is relevant to understanding America’s past, present and future.
