Excerpt from The Protozoa The Protozoa not only claim the interest of the professional naturalist, but also that of a wider circle of nature students who, with the aid of the microscope, have always found here a fascinating field for observation and research. In writing the present volume, embodying a summary of the more recent discoveries concerning these minute animals, I have aimed to keep in mind the needs of the latter class of naturalists, as well as those who search more deeply in the unicellular organisms for the solution of many morphological problems which remain unsolved in the higher animals, or for vital processes which afford a transition from the manifestations of life in its simplest expression to life as seen in the lower forms of invertebrates. The subject-matter of the volume is treated from three points of view: (1) The historical, to which the first chapter is devoted. (2) The comparative, to which five chapters are given: one to the group of Protozoa as a whole, the other four to the main classes. (3) The general, to which three chapters are devoted. One of these is given to the phenomena of old age or senile degeneration in Protozoa and renewal of youth through the union of two individuals, and to the bearing of these phenomena upon sexual reproduction in general. Another is given to the special structures of nuclei and centrosomes of the Protozoa; this, the most technical chapter in the book, is introduced because of the growing importance which the Protozoa have in the problems of cellular biology, especially with those dealing with the origin of the division-centre and its accompanying structures in the cells of the Metazoa. The last chapter is devoted to a consideration of the physiology of the Protozoa, with especial reference to the Protozoa as organisms endowed with the powers of coordination and of adaptation, which up to the present time have eluded physical and chemical analysis. Excerpt from Protozoa in Biological Research Numerous textbooks of varying degrees of excellence for the study of Protozoa are now on the market and should be consulted for a general treatment of these unicellular forms. This volume will not fill such a need, but has been prepared as a result of a discussion by a group of specialists assembled during the summer of 1937 at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, for the purpose of ascertaining the best means to stimulate further research on these unicellular animals. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Protozoa: With Special Reference to the Parasitic Forms This book, as its name, is intended to serve as on introduction to the subject with which it deals, and not in any way as a complete treatise upon it. The science of "protozoology," as it is now generally termed, covers a vast field, and deals with an immense series of organisms infinitely varied in form, structure, and modes of life. In recent years the recognition of the importance of the Protozoa to mankind in various ways, and especially from the medical point of view, has focussed attention upon them, and has brought about a great increase of our knowledge concerning these forms of life. To set forth adequately and in full detail all that is now known about the Protozoa would be a task that could not be attempted in a volume of this size, but would require a work many times larger. The aim of the present work is essentially didactic - that is to say, it is intended to furnish a guide to those who, having at least some general knowledge of biology, desire a closer acquaintance with the special problems presented by the Protozoa. First and foremost, it attempts to define the position of these organisms in Nature, and to determine, as far as possible, in this way exactly what should be included under the term "Protozoa," and what should be excluded from the group. Excerpt from Protozoölogy There is need, furthermore, of caution in studying protozoa under such artificial conditions, for they are extremely sensitive to variations and are readily adapted to new conditions. The reactions, both morphological and physiological, of protozoa under such conditions of study require careful control. The study of protozoa, therefore, even when it is possible to apply bacteriological methods, is fundamentally different from the study of bacteria as at present carried on. The latter, dependent upon growth conditions, colony formation, reactions to media, etc., are essentially physiological and based upon the functions of the organisms. The study of protozoa, on the other hand, is essentially morphological, or based upon the structures of the protozoan cell, and involves the changes in cell structures which an individual undergoes during various phases of vitality. Hence it becomes necessary, first of all, to know the life history of the protozoon and the fundamental modifications which its protoplasm assumes. Modern protozoology, therefore, has demanded as a basis for genera and species of protozoa a knowledge of the complete life cycle, and as a basis for classification not the strue tures of the single cells, but the structures which the protoplasm may assume throughout its entire life history from fertilization to death or until the next fertilization. The present volume, finally, does not aim at being an exhaustive treatise on the protozoa; it aims, rather, to give an introduction to the study of modern protozoo'logy as seen from the author's point of view; and for numerous omissions, incomplete references, etc., he can only plead the excuse of a large subject crowded into a limited space.
