Book Description
The Hamilton Depression (HAM-D) and Anxiety (HAM-A) scales are the most widely used instruments for measuring outcome in mood disorders. The Zung scales have also been widely used, especially in psychopharmacology; however, they have also been used to measure both negative and positive well-being in WHO studies in psychosomatic medicine. These scales were developed around three decades ago. In collaboration with Hamilton, the author has updated these scales to make them more applicable to the needs of health workers at all levels. The scoring sheets and the corresponding manuals of the scales are included along with the documentation of both internal (coherence) and external (discriminating and predictive) validity.

The Major Depression Rating Scale has been revised to correspond more strictly to ICD-10. A new appendix combines didactically the WHO (Ten) Well-Being Questionnaire, the WHO (ICD-10) criteria for depression, and the Major Depression Rating Scale. Furthermore, the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia has been included. The scoring sheets and the corresponding manuals of the scales are presented along with documentation of both internal (coherence) and external (discriminating and predictive) validity.

Book Description
From Chapter 1 "Depression, like many other mental disorders, is characterised by the presence of a number of symptoms which are changeable over time." Among these symptoms are a depressed mood and a loss of interest; physical and cognitive changes may also occur. Because of difficulties in diagnosis (and varied criteria) only estimates in the global number of cases of depression can be made. Some estimates put it in front of chronic heart disease as a health problem and cause of death. This revised edition covers developments in diagnosis, theraphy, prognosis, economic evaluation and quality improvement. * Provides accompanying commentaries by an outstanding line up of contributors * Covers developments in diagnosis, therapy, prognosis, economic evaluation and quality improvement * Provides an unbiased and reliable reference point

Book Description
The rubric "Quality of Life" first came to the explicit attention of the medical profession a little over thirty years ago. Despite the undoubted fact that each one of us has his or her own Quality of Life, be it good or bad, there is still no general agreement about its definition, or the manner in which it should be evaluated. Although much has been written about quality of life, this work has been largely concerned with population-based studies, especially in health policy and health economics. The importance of "individual" quality of life has been neglected, in part because of a failure to define quality of life itself with sufficient care, in part perhaps because of a belief that it is impossible to develop a meaningful method of measuring individual variables. The editors of this book believe that the primary focus of quality of life is and must continue to be the individual, who alone can define it and assess its changing personal significance. The challenge of presenting this belief
