Excerpt from Lines of Battle, and Other Poems In the first year of the Civil War Hawthorne wrote to an English friend: "Ten thousand poetasters have tried, and tried in vain to give us a rousing 'Scots wha hae wi' Wallace bled.' If we fight no better than we sing, may the Lord have mercy upon us and upon the nation!" Hawthorne lived long enough to see that his country men, North and South, could fight.
