Book Description
Excerpt from The Baptist Memorial, and Monthly Record, 1850, Vol. 9: Devoted to the History, Biography, Literature and Statistics of the Denomination The od'ering of prises for the best essays, by the Publisher (see Pros pectus), will, we believe, draw out the talents of some of our best writers, and thus improve the contents of the work; but will our friends remem ber that all these improvements cost money, and the Publisher must eventually sink under such heavy responsibilities, unless the denomina tion shall generously come up, to his help. The work will be conducted nearly as it has been hitherto, but im proved if possible with our limited resources. In our Monthly Record and Literary Notices we are obliged to be quite brief, in order to give room for general family reading. The Juvenile Department has been often necessarily omitted during the past year. We shall endeavor to insert occasional articles for youth, if we do not have a separate Juvenile Department. We would say that the services of some of the best writers in the denomination have been secured, to contribute regularly to the work. Book Description
Excerpt from The Baptist Memorial and Monthly Record, 1849, Vol. 8: Devoted to the History, Biography, Literature and Statistics of the Denomination A happy New-year to you, Mr. Memorial 3 and many of them, as the good old people used to say, when wishing to their friends, the compliments of the season. It has long been the custom for you and your brother periodicals to favor your readers with a new-year's Address, and to express upon the entrance of a new year, your kind wishes on their behalf. You will permit one of your constant readers, on the present occasion, to reciprocate the compliment, and to express the wish, and I will add, the hope that the year 1849 may prove, by far the happiest and the most successful of your hitherto somewhat che quered career; a year not only, in these respects, far transcending all that have preceded it, but a precursor of long years of still greater and more enlarged prosperity and usefulness for generations to come. Book Description
Excerpt from The Baptist Memorial and Monthly Record, 1846, Vol. 5: Devoted to the History, Biography, Literature and Statistics of the Denomination With many heartfelt thanks for the generous kindness extended to him by the editorial fraternity and the public - with sincere regrets for whatever has been wrong, and desires for the prosperity of the Memorial and all its friends, and with a prevailing conviction of the immense desirableness of such conciliations and con cord as may more perfectly unite the great Baptist family in the truth, and then by their persevering endeavors may give to that truth the widest and earliest diffusion he begs leave to set his name to this notice. Book Description
The “compelling and lively” story of a pioneering abolitionist schoolteacher and her far-reaching influence on civil rights and American law (Richard S. Newman, author of Freedom’s Prophet). When Prudence Crandall, a Canterbury, Connecticut schoolteacher, accepted a black woman as a student, she unleashed a storm of controversy that catapulted her to national notoriety, and drew the attention of the most significant pro- and anti-slavery activists of the early nineteenth century. The Connecticut state legislature passed its infamous Black Law in an attempt to close down her school. Crandall was arrested and jailed—but her legal legacy had a lasting impact. Crandall v. State was the first full-throated civil rights case in U.S. history. The arguments by attorneys in Crandall played a role in two of the most fateful Supreme Court decisions, Dred Scott v. Sandford, and the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education. In this book, author and lawyer Donald E. Williams Jr. marshals a wealth of detail concerning the life and work of Prudence Crandall, her unique role in the fight for civil rights, and her influence on legal arguments for equality in America that, in the words of Brown v. Board attorney Jack Greenberg, “serves to remind us once more about how close in time America is to the darkest days of our history.” “The book offers substantive and well-rounded portraits of abolitionists, colonizationists, and opponents of black equality―portraits that really dig beneath the surface to explain the individuals’ motivations, weaknesses, politics, and life paths.” ―The New England Quarterly “Taking readers from Connecticut schoolrooms to the highest court in the land, [Williams] gives us heroes and villains, triumph and tragedy, equity and injustice on the rough road to full freedom.” —Richard S. Newman, author of Freedom’s Prophet
