The Land That Time Forgot
Author: Edgar Rice Burroughs
Publisher: BoD - Books on Demand
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
The Land That Time Forgot opens with the discovery near Greenland of a floating thermos flask containing a manuscript by castaway Tyler Bowen, Jr. The document recounts a series of adventures that starts with a sea battle against a German U-boat and ends on a mysterious island populated by hostile prehistoric animals and people. The second part of the book, “The People That Time Forgot,” continues the story with the tale of Tom Billings, who has been sent on a mission to rescue Bowen after his manuscript was discovered. He flies solo over the mountainous cliffs that encircle the island and is attacked by a monstrous flying reptile, forcing him to crash-land. Billings then attempts to make his way on foot back to the rest of his party while contending with dangerous inhabitants from different stages of human development. The final installment of the story, “Out of Time’s Abyss,” reveals what happened to Bradley, a crew member who was sent on a scouting expedition earlier in the story and was never heard from again. This trilogy of short novels was originally published serially in 1918 in Blue Book Magazine. In 1924 they were published in a single volume by A. C. McClurg. The Burroughs fan community seems to fall into two camps about whether the story comprises three separate novellas, or whether it’s a single novel divided into three parts. This Standard Ebooks edition follows the 1924 edition in combining the three into a single novel.

The Islands Time Forgot
Author: Graham Morse
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1452005656
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
Fifty-five islands, nineteen countries, seventeen thousand miles ... and one amazing adventure. A fascinating story of four sailors who discovered the magic of the South Pacific ... and the islands time forgot After recovery from a serious illness, Graham Morse vowed to achieve his dream of sailing across the South Pacific with his wife, Janet, and reliving the adventures of his boyhood heroes, Captain Cook, Thor Heyerdahl, and Christian Fletcher. They had expected to find some of the most beautiful islands in the world, and were not disappointed. But they were surprised to find a world where life has changed very little in two hundred years, and where the people have very different values than his own society, and however poor, take pleasure in giving. But sadly it is a world on the cusp of change. Travel with them as they discover the mysteries of ancient Polynesian culture, are welcomed into the homes of humble people, meet fascinating characters, are invited to village feasts, work with black pearl farmers, and swim with seals, sharks, and whales. The voyage --which took them across the world's largest ocean --was not without its dangers, incident, and tragedy. The Islands Time Forgot is not just for sailors who yearn to make such a voyage, but for all armchair travelers who have dreamed about the South Pacific that only a sailing boat can reach.

The Man That Time Forgot

Category : Fiction

Pages : 402
Book Description
FINALLY OUT IN PAPERBACK. The Official Number One Time Travel book in the World: 'The Man That Time Forgot'. The Sci-Fi action comedy that's been compared to Monty Python, Red Dwarf and Groundhog Day by reviewers and critics. --- History is a great big lie. Just open any book or talk to any history professor and they'll tell you that history is filled with nothing but glorious battles, great leaders, plagues, large fires, earthquakes, famous inventors, Egyptians and Louis Pasteur. This couldn't be further from the truth. History, in fact, is filled with a whole lot of nothing. Andrew Adams knows that only too well. He's an ordinary man living his life in the all too abundant and mundane spaces between those great moments. Just like all ordinary men he spends much of his life wondering what the point of it all is, struggling to form meaningful relationships or to find his place in society. Andrew's life follows a daily routine much like that of many others: he wakes up, does the minimum required to get himself through the day - careful not to learn too much or create a lasting impression on anyone - and then goes back to bed. There's only one, ever-so-minor inconvenience that continually stands in the way of Andrew's ignorantly blissful life Time-travel. Since before he can remember every time Andrew sleeps he's randomly flung through time and space, never knowing where or when he'll wake up. The only thing he can be certain of is that the location he arrives at won't be anywhere exciting. He's a cursed man who had no idea why this happens to him, clueless to how it all started or how it can be stopped. Rarely does he find a place to fit in and, on those occasions that he does, he can only stay there until he loses his fight against sleep. Andrew Adams has all but given up hope and given up on life. That is until he meets someone else like him who sets in motion a chain of events that will lead him on a journey of discovery and answers to questions that perhaps even he didn't want to know. With the help of a mysterious and tenacious woman, an old drunken priest and a seven-foot, psychopathic assassin Andrew's life is about to be given a purpose. Finally he might start to view his abilities as a gift instead of a curse and perhaps learn that there's always something to be thankful for. Whether he wants to or not.

The 100 Greatest Bands of All Time [2 volumes]
Author: David V. Moskowitz
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1440803404
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 803
Book Description
This one-of-a-kind reference investigates the music and the musicians that set the popular trends of the last half century in America. Many rock fans have, at one time or another, ranked their favorite artists in order of talent, charisma, and musical influence on the world as they see it. In this same spirit, author and music historian David V. Moskowitz expands on the concept of "top ten" lists to provide a lineup of the best 100 musical groups from the past 60 years. Since the chosen bands are based on the author's personal taste, this two-volume set provokes discussion of which performers are included and why, offering insights into the surprising influences behind them. From the Everly Brothers, to the Ramones, to Public Enemy, the work covers a wide variety of styles and genres, clearly illustrating the connections between them. Entries focus on the group's history, touring, membership, major releases, selected discography, bibliography, and influence. Contributions from leading scholars in popular music shed light on derivative artists and underscore the overall impact of the performers on the music industry.
