From Revolution to Ethics, Second Edition
Author: Julian Bourg
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773552472
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 725
Book Description
Winner: CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book Award, CHOICE Magazine (2008) Winner: Morris D. Forkosch Prize for the best book in intellectual history, Journal of the History of Ideas (2008) The French revolts of May 1968, the largest general strike in twentieth-century Europe, were among the most famous and colourful episodes of the twentieth century. Julian Bourg argues that during the subsequent decade the revolts led to a remarkable paradigm shift in French thought - the concern for revolution in the 1960s was transformed into a fascination with ethics. Challenging the prevalent view that the 1960s did not have any lasting effect, From Revolution to Ethics shows how intellectuals and activists turned to ethics as the touchstone for understanding interpersonal, institutional, and political dilemmas. In absorbing and scrupulously researched detail Bourg explores the developing ethical fascination as it emerged among student Maoists courting terrorism, anti-psychiatric celebrations of madness, feminists mobilizing against rape, and pundits and philosophers championing humanitarianism. From Revolution to Ethics provides a compelling picture of how May 1968 helped make ethics a compass for navigating contemporary global concerns. In a new preface for the second edition published to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the events, Bourg assessses the worldwide influence of the ethical turn, from human rights to the return of religion and the new populism.

Transpacific Reform and Revolution
Author: Zhongping Chen
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 1503636259
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 412
Book Description
The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw the turbulent end of China's imperial system, violent revolutionary movements, and the fraught establishment of a republican government. During these decades of reform and revolution, millions of far-flung "overseas Chinese" remained connected to Chinese domestic movements. This book uses rich archival sources and a new network approach to examine how reform and revolution in North American Chinatowns influenced political change in China and the transpacific Chinese diaspora from 1898 to 1918. Historian Zhongping Chen focuses on the transnational activities of Kang Youwei, Sun Yat-sen, and other politicians, especially their mobilization of the Chinese in North America to join reformist or revolutionary parties in patriotic fights for a Western-style constitutional monarchy or republic in China. These new reformist and revolutionary parties, including the first Chinese women's political organization, led transpacific movements against American anti-Chinese racism in 1905 and supported constitutional reform and the Republican Revolution in China around 1911, achieving transpacific expansion through innovative use of cross-cultural political ideologies and intertwined institutional and interpersonal networks. Through network analysis of the origins, interrelations, and influences of Chinese reform and revolution in North America, this book makes a significant contribution to modern Chinese history, Asian American and Asian Canadian history, and Chinese diasporic scholarship.

Violent Class Struggles and The Need for Revolutionary Change: Anti-WTO Organized Labor Protest vs Seattle Police
Author: Marco T. Ntobi
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1365080374
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 398
Book Description
The whole purpose of revolutionary violence is to destroy at its very roots the institutionalized system of greed which is also the institutionalized system of violence. Today, with the phoney cry of "law and order" the rulers of the imperialist nations attempt to throw the onus of violence on those who are protesting the system under which they live. But the onus is noton them, for violence is the near-monopoly of the state apparatus. Compared to the machinery of violence that the ruling class deploys, the violence of the protesters is like the pop of a toygun beside the explosion of a one-thousand-ton bomb. The best I can hope is that it will encourage others to make their own study so that we can all know more completely the enemy we are facing and challenging. I have attempted to trace as clearly and briefly as I can the nature of the capitalist and imperialist systems and the rising world class struggles against it - a bitter, life-and-death conflicts which is now only in its middle phase.
