Book Description
Excerpt from Anglo-Indian Studies My book, "Indian Problems," has not only been well received by the British Press, but has been quoted by Lord Curzon in a Debate in the House of Lords. Among my humble suggestions therein which aroused attention was the granting of the Victoria Cross to members of the Native Army, which was graciously taken into consideration by the King-Emperor, with the result that the much-coveted V.C. is now within the reach of my countrymen. Such circumstances have encouraged me to publish the present volume, "Anglo-Indian Studies." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Anglo-Indian Domestic Life: A Letter From an Artist in India to His Mother in EnglandIt is probable that other indications of this hiatus will be discoverable than those which belong to more paper and type, and the retention of the juvenile character of the original com position; but they will, it is behaved, arise more from something like an antiquated air which the absence of that modern tone, and of any reference to various modern features which have been created by the Rebellion of 1857-8, than from any serious deficiency or inaccuracy of facts. The memorable events of that Rebellion, and the vast political changes they have wrought, appear to cut ofi' what may be called old India - India under the time honored rule of the east-india Company, and modern India under the sceptre of Queen Victoria, by an indefinite and great gulf.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. While writing them my thoughts have often turned to happy hours passed in your society, and pleasant scenes witnessed beneath your roof. Book Description
Excerpt from The Hearseys: Five Generations of an Anglo-Indian Family Two years previously Warren Hastings had, in the execution of what his opponents styled his frantic military exploits, sent a Bengal column under Colonel Goddard to march across India to the Bombay Presidency, and there to operate against the Mahratta army of Sindhia. Goddard now required reinforcements, and to this end a force was despatched early in the year 1780, under Captain Popham, one of the boldest and most enterprising officers who ever served England in India. Book Description
Excerpt from Anglo-Indian Worthies Frightened country-people flocked into Madras to take shelter under the guns of Fort St. George. The Government then awoke from their fancied security; but the preparations for defence were made hurriedly, and proved insufficient. The Commander-in-Chief took the command of a force which was assembled at Conjeveram, where young Munro was ordered to join the camp. Colonel Baillie's detachment was recalled from the Kistna, and, in an attempt to join the head-quarters, was defeated by Hyder Ali, who interposed his army between the two forces, and prevented them from joining. The Commander-in-Chief of the English army retired to the immediate neighbourhood of Madras. On hearing of these disasters, Sir Eyre Coote, the Commander-in-Chief of Bengal, hastened from Calcutta to Madras, where he took command of the army destined for service in the field. During the delay that elapsed while the necessary preparations were being made, Hyder Ali was everywhere triumphant in the Carnatic, the scattered garrisons of Madura, Wandiwash, Vellore, and other places merely holding their own against his attacks. When Sir Eyre Coote commenced his campaign, Mr. Munro served with a sepoy battalion, and was present at the decisive battle of Porto Novo, and almost every engagement of importance that took place during the war. Hyder Ali was completely defeated and driven out of the Carnatic. For five years Mr. Munro was employed on garrison duty in various parts of the country, and for two years he served under Captain, afterwards Colonel, Read, in the Intelligence Department. He was engaged in most of the military operations in the war with Tippoo Sultan, who had succeeded his father in the sovereignty of Mysore, which ended in 1792 in the subjugation of that monarch, and in the cession of certain territory, including the Baramahal and Dindigal, to the East India Company.
