Critical thinking is a method for dealing with the information overload we have today. Sometimes in life, we are faced with problems and situations that we are unable to solve; we waste a lot of time without coming to a decision or solution that satisfies us. Critical thinkers have an easier life. They think about the questions before deciding on their answers. Every time we read or attempt to analyze the information we have never seen or confusing information, we are in cognitive strain. Our energy levels increase, and we start to pay close attention. We do this because we want to figure out the problem instead of just quitting. The analytical thinker's mind is habitually alert and vigilant to potential problems and consequences that may be short-term or long-term due to decisions made or actions taken. In this book, you will learn: * Tools and skills to overcome hindrances to critical thinking * Powerful techniques to practice your critical thinking skills * How to use critical thinking to tackle challenges, solving problems, and making the right decisions * How critical thinking applies in the professional world * Importance of creativity and how to unleash it * How to make mind maps to develop approaches * Strategies to improve your analytical and logical skills to achieve peak performance * Techniques used by successful people ... And much more! Once you have grasped the art of critical thinking and started applying it, you are likely to marvel at how much of your valuable resources you can save. You will also find that you can optimize systems in a way that reduces waste and inefficiencies. Once you know HOW to think, the rest is just plugging in the data. You pick the question, apply the principles of critical thinking, and,in a short time, you have an answer that makes your life better. You will finish reading this book feeling more analytical in every aspect of your life. You will learn to examine your mental processes, including your thoughts, feelings, and desires. When you become a critical thinker, you will be flabbergasted at how you can transform your aspirations into reality. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation—each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions. Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives—and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Winner of the National Academy of Sciences Best Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the ten best books of 2011, Thinking, Fast and Slow is destined to be a classic.

Mind, Metaphysics, and Value in the Thomistic and Analytical Traditions

Book Description
Contemporary western philosophy divides into three broad traditions: the analytical, the continental, and the historical. In the latter half of the twentieth century, analytical philosophy was dominant in the English-speaking world and tended to ignore the other two traditions. Now, however, analytical philosophy is less isolationist. It has come to appreciate the vitality of historical philosophy. Given their commonality of interests and shared appreciation of the values of conceptual clarity and argumentative rigour, it is particularly appropriate that there should be engagement between the main English-language tradition and the philosophy of Aquinas and, more broadly, of Thomism. The essays in this collection range widely across the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind and action, and theory of value with most linking analytical and Aristotelian-Thomistic ideas and some focusing on Aquinas in particular. This collection is distinctive in content and unusual in North American publishing in the areas of medieval philosophy, scholasticism, and Thomism in that the majority of the contributors are based in Europe--many at medieval universities in which scholasticism had a historical presence, and in some cases a prominent and distinguished one. Mind, Metaphysics, and Value brings together the interests, knowledge, and expertise of a wide range of scholars to form a broad and exciting intellectual community.
