Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1883, Vol. 86 The treatment by the continuous galvanic current was persisted in faith fully for a long period, but, as it did not afford any permanent relief, it was finally decided to resort to more positive measures. I advised that one or both of the nerves supplying the affected part, the median and radial, be stretched, and she entered the hospital the 9th of February, 1882. At a consultation with the surgeons, Drs. Hunt and Morton, it was thought well to try Specific treatment before resorting to operative meas ures, and she was, therefore, put on large doses of the iodide of potassium and given mercurials, with, however, no beneficial results. Hence it was finally resolved to stretch the median nerve; but to await the result of this measure before disturbing the radial. Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1885, Vol. 90 In the preparation of this paper it has been my intention to present a full report of a case of retention cyst of the pancreas, which has recently come under my observation, and, at the same time, summarize, in a com pact form, the clinical history of similar cases which will serve as a basis for some general remarks on the surgical treatment of cysts of the pan creas. Case I. Cyst of Pancreas; Laparotomy; Recovery - vo12, set. 19, laborer, German, was admitted to Milwaukee Hospital Nov. 28, 1884. He is small for his age and not robust, but he claims that, with one excep tion, he has never been sick, and that no hereditary tendency to disease exists in his family. Five weeks ago, while enjoying perfect health, he was thrown from a wagon, striking the. Ground on thelett side of the abdo men, a heavy keg falling upon his back, and increasing the force of the fall. The pain felt immediately after the accident was confined to his back, at a point where he was struck by the keg, but it was not sufficient in intensity to prevent him from following his occupation as a mason's apprentice. In a few days, however, diarrhoea set in, which persisted for two weeks, greatly reducing his strength and weight. If he had any fever during this time it was not. Sufficiently severe to attract his attention. His appetite was not impaired, and, though he vomited occasionally, neither vomiting nor the diarrhoea seemed to be aggravated by the time of eating or the kind or variety of food. After two weeks he noticed a tumor in the left hypochondriac region, which was round, smooth, and painless. The tumor increased rapidly in size, and soon gave rise to a sensation of fulness in the stomach, and later on, to regurgitation and vomiting soon after meals. Appetite slightly impaired. At this time the patient was treated for a short time by my friend, Dr. F. H. Day, of nvauwatosa, Wis., who resorted to symptomatic treatment, and observing no improve ment, referred him to me for diagnosis, and, in case it should be deemed advisable, for surgical treatment. Let it not be objected to the Viola ovata that we are not acquaint ed with the active principle Of the plant which thus rapidly arrests the progress Of one Of the most terrible accidents to which humanity is liable. The principal substance which can be extracted from it is mucilage, and this is best done by infusion in water. It yields a greater proportion Of it than any Of the violets, and nearly as much as the same quantity of slippery-elm, (ulmus fulva3) hence it is much in use in dysentery, diarrhoea, strangury, and other afi'ections of the urinary organs. Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1912, Vol. 143 Table I shows the causes of fluid as found in the peritoneum in 2217 cases at autopsy. A quart or more of fluid was present in all these cases. Cases of septic peritonitis and hemoperitoneum are omitted. The bulk of the remaining cases are due, as was antici pated, to one of five causes: Cardiac weakness, nephritis, abdominal neoplasms, cirrhotic liver and tuberculous peritonitis. I am uncertain whether the cases of adherent pericardium (all of which were associated with extensive peritoneal thickening) should be classed with the Cases of cardiac weakness, or with those of chronic peritonitis.
