The next two accounts concern the early phases of the French and Indian War, in which Washington commanded a Virginia regiment. As Bruce Ragsdale shows, it was the inefficacy of chattel slavery, as much as moral revulsion at the practice, that informed WashingtonÕs famous decision to free his slaves after his death.
