Penny from Heaven

ISBN: 0375849262
Category : Juvenile Fiction

Pages : 290
Book Description
Newbery Honor–winning, New York Times–bestselling, and as full of fun and adventure as it is of deeper family issues. School’s out for summer, and Penny and her cousin Frankie have big plans to eat lots of butter pecan ice cream, swim at the local pool, and cheer on their favorite baseball team—the Brooklyn Dodgers! But sometimes things don’t go according to plan. Penny’s mom doesn’t want her to swim because she’s afraid Penny will get polio. Frankie is constantly getting into trouble, and Penny feels caught between the two sides of her family. But even if the summer doesn’t exactly start as planned . . . things can work out in the most unexpected ways! Set just after World War II, this thought-provoking novel also highlights the prejudice Penny’s Italian American family must confront because people of Italian descent were “the enemy” not long ago. Inspired by three-time Newbery Honor winner Jennifer Holm’s own Italian American family, Penny from Heaven is a story about families—about the things that tear them apart and the things that bring them back together. Includes an author’s note with photographs and background on World War II, internment camps, and 1950s America, as well as additional resources and websites. Booklist: “Holm impressively wraps pathos with comedy in this coming-of-age story, populated by a cast of vivid characters.”

The Adventures Of Aunt Jane's Nieces
Author: L. Frank Baum
Publisher: Jazzybee Verlag
ISBN: 3849643654
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 1742
Book Description
Aside from the Oz books and all the other fairy tales, there is a long list of series books for older boys and girls—perhaps in the twelve to fifteen age group—that came from Baum's pen. These books were almost always published under one of several pseudonyms, and from 1906 to 1919, at least one additional title appeared in each current series every year. Baum adopted a woman's name for his stories for girls; this is one of the series for which he used the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne. The first volume, Aunt Jane's Nieces, appeared in 1906, and the interested reader can follow the adventures of the heroines through the nine volumes that followed. This edition contains all nine volumes of the Aunt Jane books on more than 2000 pages.

James Malcolm Rymer, Penny Fiction, and the Family
Author: Rebecca Nesvet
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 104009371X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 207
Book Description
James Malcolm Rymer, Penny Fiction, and the Family is the first monograph focusing on Sweeney Todd and Varney the Vampyre’s creator James Malcolm Rymer (1814–1884). It argues that Rymer wrote his so-called ‘penny bloods’ and ‘dreadfuls’ for and about British urban working families. In the 1840s, the notion of the family acquired unprecedented prominence and radical potential. Raised in an artisanal artistic-literary family, Rymer wrote for and edited family magazines early in that genre’s history, deployed Chartist domesticity to liberal ends, and collaborated with cheap publisher Edward Lloyd to define and popularise the domestic romance genre. In 1850s–1860s penny serials published by George W.M. Reynolds, John Dicks, and Lloyd, Rymer showed how families might sustain Empire and advocated for patriarchal family dynamics in response to literary and political change. During the fin-de-siècle, Rymer’s penny fiction was demonised as hyper-masculine ‘bloods’ and ‘dreadfuls’, a reputation it retains today. Reading Victorian penny fiction’s most indicative author’s works as a corpus and with attention to their original textual, cultural, and political contexts reveals it as the family-oriented phenomenon it in fact was.
