Book Description
This 1915 book endeavours to capture not simply the components of the criminal justice system, but the very spirit in which justice is administered. Although the focus is primarily on law, modern readers will appreciate the extent to which themes of history, politics and sociology are integral to the arguments of the text.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Administration of Justice in Criminal Matters (in England and Wales) The first edition of this book was published in 1911, as a volume of the Cambridge Manuals of Science and Literature. That edition being almost exhausted, it has been thought well to republish it in an enlarged form, as likely to prove useful to a considerable class of readers. In its present form it is intended to serve as a first book for newly appointed Justices of the Peace, superior police officers, and law students; but it is hoped that it will also appeal to a larger class of general readers who are interested in subjects bordering on the domain of law, history, politics, and sociology. It will be seen that it has a wider scope than the ordinary law book, as it not only gives a survey of the whole field of the administration of the Criminal Law as a working system, with some comments thereon, but also shows the connection between Criminal Law and our system of government. Another object kept steadily in view has been to show the spirit in which our Criminal Law is administered and which pervades every part of it. It is not intended to serve as a mere text-book, or book of practice, since it deals with the broad outlines of the system and not with details; but it may possibly serve as an introduction to such old and well-established works as Stone's Justices' Manual, the Magistrate's General Practice, and Archbold's Criminal Pleading and Evidence, the size of which has become formidable. Book Description
Excerpt from On the Administration of Criminal Justice in England; And the Spirit of the English Government I thought further, that it might not be un profitable to give a slight sketch of the public and private manners of the English nation, because we can never be really acquainted with a people's laws whilst ignorant of the qiirit in which they are executed. That too which renders the manners of the English the most worthy of praise, being derived from the influence of their constitution, rather than the effect of climate, it occurred to me that such a picture might peculiarly interest us. It will show what, by the daily action of our new institutions, our present manners will infallibly one day become; or, if those institutions are doomed to experience insuperable obstacles in our old prepossessions, it will exhibit the new manners which, by a bold effort over ourselves. Book Description
Excerpt from Criminal Proceedings on Indictment and Information (in England and Wales) This book is, in the main, an amplification of the notes I made when, in my early years at the Bar, I went about the South Wales Circuit. In itself it is an attempt to present a working code of Criminal Procedure, which, in addition to being an embodiment of the existing Law, should be of use to those who practise in the High Court, at Assizes, and at Quarter Sessions. Book Description
The Administration of Civil Justice in England and Wales provides information of how both criminal and civil law is administered. This book discusses the jurisdiction and composition of the country courts, civil work of the magistrates' courts, as well as of the High Court of Justice. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the historical origins from which the modern courts have emerged. This text then explains the various strata of courts, namely country courts, magistrates' courts, the Court of Justice including its various divisions, and the appeal facilities that are available to litigants. Other chapters consider the different administrative tribunals and inquiries. The final chapter deals with the costs and the availability of legal aid and advice. This book is a valuable resource for readers who are interested in the administration of civil and criminal justice. Law students and newly qualified practitioners will also find this book useful.
