Book Description
Includes a foreword by Major General David A. Rubenstein. From the editor: "71F, or "71 Foxtrot," is the AOC (area of concentration) code assigned by the U.S. Army to the specialty of Research Psychology. Qualifying as an Army research psychologist requires, first of all, a Ph.D. from a research (not clinical) intensive graduate psychology program. Due to their advanced education, research psychologists receive a direct commission as Army officers in the Medical Service Corps at the rank of captain. In terms of numbers, the 71F AOC is a small one, with only 25 to 30 officers serving in any given year. However, the 71F impact is much bigger than this small cadre suggests. Army research psychologists apply their extensive training and expertise in the science of psychology and social behavior toward understanding, preserving, and enhancing the health, well being, morale, and performance of Soldiers and military families. As is clear throughout the pages of this book, they do this in many ways and in many areas, but always with a scientific approach. This is the 71F advantage: applying the science of psychology to understand the human dimension, and developing programs, policies, and products to benefit the person in military operations. This book grew out of the April 2008 biennial conference of U.S. Army Research Psychologists, held in Bethesda, Maryland. This meeting was to be my last as Consultant to the Surgeon General for Research Psychology, and I thought it would be a good idea to publish proceedings, which had not been done before. As Consultant, I'd often wished for such a document to help explain to people what it is that Army Research Psychologists "do for a living." In addition to our core group of 71Fs, at the Bethesda 2008 meeting we had several brand-new members, and a number of distinguished retirees, the "grey-beards" of the 71F clan. Together with longtime 71F colleagues Ross Pastel and Mark Vaitkus, I also saw an unusual opportunity to capture some of the history of the Army Research Psychology specialty while providing a representative sample of current 71F research and activities. It seemed to us especially important to do this at a time when the operational demands on the Army and the total force were reaching unprecedented levels, with no sign of easing, and with the Army in turn relying more heavily on research psychology to inform its programs for protecting the health, well being, and performance of Soldiers and their families."

Book Description
How do we understand and explain phenomena in psychology? What does the concept of “causality” mean when we discuss higher psychological functions and behavior? Is it possible to generate “laws” in a psychological and behavioral science—laws that go beyond statistical regularities, frequencies, and probabilities? An international group of authors compare and contrast the use of a causal model in psychology with a newer model—the catalytic model. The Catalyzing Mind: Beyond Models of Causality proposes an approach to the qualitative nature of psychological phenomena that focuses on the psychological significance and meaning of conditions, contexts, and situations as well as their sign-mediating processes. Contributors develop, apply, and criticize the notion of a catalyzing mind in hopes of achieving conceptual clarity and rigor. Disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, semiotics and biosemiotics are used for an interdisciplinary approach to the book. Research topics such as history and national identity, immigration, and transitions to adulthood are all brought into a dialogue with the concept of the catalyzing mind. With a variety of disciplines, theoretical concepts, and research topics this book is a collective effort at an approach to move beyond models of causality for explaining and understanding psychological phenomena.

Book Description
The book you hold in your hands is a powerful tool in the arsenal of our Soldiers' well-being and, in some cases, very survival. Since our nation began putting Soldiers in harm's way, our forces have experienced the psychological trauma of war. In some cases, the number of casualties due to psychological injury approached the rates of physical injury. As leaders, we spend countless days training our Soldiers to survive the actual battle. Combat training, battle drills, physical fitness, and medical readiness help ensure their physical survival and ultimate victory in the combat zone. Now, we dedicate ourselves to helping ensure their psychological survival and victory when the battle is over. This book grows out of paper presentations and discussions at the Army Research Psychology Biennial Conference held April 24-25, 2008, in Bethesda, Maryland. It provides a snapshot of groundbreaking research currently being done by Army research psychologists around the globe. The book illuminates the many contributions of Army research psychologists to supporting Soldiers and their families, as well as enhancing their performance and wellbeing. Research breakthroughs and updated treatment methods in the areas of human performance, psychological and environmental stressors, military and family wellness, personality and organizational factors, and leader and cognitive performance are outlined within this volume. The book also serves as a valuable historical document, providing a vivid picture of the 71F Army research psychology specialty and including a number of personal career stories. It should appeal to a wide range of audiences, including operational commanders, academics, students, and anyone curious about what military research psychology is all about. Today, research psychologists remain true to the fundamental principles of Army medicine: to care for those who have borne the perils of battle in the service of the Nation. There is no higher calling.

Book Description
The psychological well-being of servicemen and women returning from war is one of the most discussed and contemplated mental health issues today. Media programs debate the epidemic of PTSD in returning veterans and the potential fallout of a less-than-adequate veteran mental health system. This public discussion is only a small glimpse into the field of military psychology. One of the most diverse specialties within psychology, it is a sector positioned and equipped to influence such concepts as psychological resilience, consequences of extended family stress, the role of technology in mental healthcare delivery, and how to increase human performance under harsh conditions. Military Psychologists' Desk Reference is the authoritative guide in the field of military mental health, covering in a clear and concise manner the depth and breadth of this expanding area at a pivotal and relevant time. Moore and Barnett, former military psychologists, bring together the field's top experts to provide concise and targeted reviews of the most salient aspects of military mental health and present the material in an easily digestible manner. Chapters cover important topics such as military culture, working with Special Operations Forces, professional issues and ethical challenges, women in combat, posttraumatic stress, anxiety and sleep disorders, psychologists' involvement in interrogations, and how to build and sustain a resilient Force, to name but a few. Authors consist of a combination of current and former military psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and Chaplains, experts from the Department of Veterans Affairs, prominent academicians, and representatives from other governmental and civilian organizations. This comprehensive resource is a must for every military psychologist, as well as for non-military clinicians, researchers, counselors, social workers, educators, and trainees who increasingly need to be familiar with this specialized area of psychology.

Book Description
Become a savvy trader with a "mindful" edge... TraderMind is an essential resource for understanding and applying mindfulness-based approaches that help to enhance an individual trader's overall performance. Based upon extensive research and practical application in the real world of the trading floor, TraderMind includes methods, tactics and techniques to build and enhance awareness and insight, which help manage thoughts and emotions and maximize trading performance. The author demonstrates how to overcome habitual or impulsive trading behaviours, manage energy levels, become more attuned to and responsive to the market, more situationally aware and build patterns of effective trading behaviour. By developing these skills and good behaviours, traders can overcome inherent biases and, ultimately, improve their trading decisions. The techniques outlined in TraderMind can be utilized as core competencies of trading psychology or can be used to complement other behavioural methods and strategies. The TraderMind tool-set does not replace the need for basic trading skills, knowledge, strategy, or key performance enablers such as preparation and performance analysis. Rather, TraderMind is designed to act as a facilitator or multiplier to enhance trader decision-making and improve overall performance. "A thoughtful read with 'bang-for-the buck' practical strategies for time pressed traders." – Linda Raschke, President at LBRGroup, Inc., CTA Also includes the TraderMind 8 Week Training Program.
