Why stimulate the develop ment or rebirth of mental arithmetic by incorporating in the contests of the Interscholastic League a mental arith metic test similar to the spelling and music memory con tests. The first would be much less a test of memory than the latter two. Mr. Russell of the Central High School of Fort Worth is the author of this suggestion. There are many benefits to be urged for a thorough grounding in numbers. It has become very fashionable of late to speak in large numbers (a modest sum of money expressed in Polish or German marks), but very few stu dents have any adequate notions of magnitude. The rela tive magnitudes in centimeters of the diameters of an electron and the universe, the wave length of sodium and that of a very long wireless wave represent adventures into the realms of the very small and the very large. How big is 2 raised to the thirty second power? How big is 2 raised to the minus tenth power? Not only is the judgment as to the ratio of large and small lacking in students but it is necessary to point out as early as possible that. It arose with the Arabic notation in which a digit takes its value from its position in the number. Thus in 23, the two stands for two tens because it is at the left of the 3. In case they wanted to represent such a number as twenty, they had no symbol to place in the position Of the number 3 in the former case and so they invented the sym bol 0 to occupy that position. It was not then considered a number. As such, it probably was established, as were negative numbers, to make subtraction always possible. Definite classes should be formed in the last two years for prospective college students who will be given instruction necessary as a foundation for the freshman year. Frequent conferences between teachers and students would be Of great value in helping to acquaint the student with the problems and difficulties Of the first year Of college. With so many electives in our best high schools it is hardly possible that immature students are capable Of making, without advice, a wise and proper selection Of courses for a foundation for college. Going to college should be a more serious matter with many Of our young people. All ground work for the first year in college should be thoroughly mastered and reviewed the last year in high school. It is absolutely wrong to classify during the last two years of high school the future college man with the one who is going out into life at once. They have different aims and purposes and cannot be formed and fashioned in the same mould. In many Of the larger high schools the formation Of separate classes for pro spective college students could be easily made. The teaching force in the smaller ones would have more diffi culty in meeting the issue - but even there a way should be found to save from failure a large number Of. Those going to college. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 14: February 8, 1930 The table of contents includes twenty-four chapters. The first of these deals with the simple subject of the value of ciphers and the methods of counting. The four chapters that follow take up the four fundamentals of addition, sub traction, multiplication, and division. These are followed by a chapter on checks to verify the processes discussed. Up to this point there is nothing extraordinary. Then fol low two chapters headed as follows, How to add diverse things, How to subtract diverse things, in which the author gives examples involving different money values, and points out methods for reducing the various coins in use to a common value. He then takes seven chapters from IX to XV to discuss fractions, discussing addition, subtrac tion, multiplication, and division separately, and giving lastly a chapter on checks or proofs to test the operations discussed. In chapter XVI he discusses progressions under the title of De las progresiones de los numeros. He declares there are three kinds of progressions: arithmetical, geometrical, and musical, but that he will present only the first two of these. Of particular interest is his quaint yet thorough explana tion of proportions and simple equations which he calls Regla de Tres (rule of Three). In five chapters, from XVII to XXI, he explains in detail the various types of simple equations and their practical application to problems in trade and partnership. He has two chapters that deal in particular with the proportional profits in partnership. This section is very interesting.
