This book is not a descriptive monograph, but an essay in cultural analysis, one which views culture as a system of symbols and which takes form under the impact of modern structural theory. A theme which runs throughout is the concept of dual organization, a structure which once characterized ten to fifteen percent of all known human societies, and which is found in a highly developed form among the Tewa today. Defined as "a system of antithetical institutions with the associated symbols, ideas, and meanings in terms of which social interaction takes place," a dual organization is for the Tewa a natural result of adapting to an environment comprised of opposites--two extremes of weather during the year; two means of subsistence, hunting in winter and farming in summer; and two periods and directions of migration in the origin myth.

During the past thirty years, Native American dance has emerged as a visible force on concert stages throughout North America. In this first major study of contemporary Native American dance, Jacqueline Shea Murphy shows how these performances are at once diverse and connected by common influences. Demonstrating the complex relationship between Native and modern dance choreography, Shea Murphy delves first into U.S. and Canadian federal policies toward Native performance from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries, revealing the ways in which government sought to curtail authentic ceremonial dancing while actually encouraging staged spectacles, such as those in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows. She then engages the innovative work of Ted Shawn, Lester Horton, and Martha Graham, highlighting the influence of Native American dance on modern dance in the twentieth century. Shea Murphy moves on to discuss contemporary concert dance initiatives, including Canada’s Aboriginal Dance Program and the American Indian Dance Theatre. In this unique study of Hopi discourse, an anthropologist describes the major public forms of Hopi discourse using a Hopi typology. That is, he describes from a Hopi viewpoint the structures of narratives, songs, songpoems, and direct address forms such as oration, prayer, and conversation. In addition to categories like versification, which are comparable to the building blocks of literature in English, he looks at distinctively Hopi genre signatures and evaluative concepts. Not only does he consider the structural characteristics of each genre, but he also relates the genres to contextual and cultural factors. Examples are presented in bilingual format, and musical notation of several Hopi songs is included. Although the book will be of interest to scholars in linguistics, ethnopoetics, discourse analysis, and performance theory, the author does not assume extensive knowledge of these fields or of the Hopi language on the part of his reader. He includes a pronunciation guide, a technical glossary, and a sketch of Hopi grammar.
