Book Description
The Construction of Metaphoric Text and Talk: A Discourse Analytic Approach argues that in view of their omnipresence in human thinking and action, metaphors play a very important role in discourse construction and organization and this role can be textural and textual. In order to explore the textual role of metaphors, Meizhen Liao proposes that metaphors in discourse be treated as a complex adaptive system (CAS), which is further composed of two sub-systems, a micro one consisted of the tenor and the vehicle and a macro one made up of different metaphors. The dynamic interaction within the micro system between the tenor and the vehicle in terms of mapping, as well as among the macro system of all the metaphors in the text or talk via competition, cooperation, or complementation contributes to the construction and organization of discourse as an adaptive process in pursuit for the goal or goals of the discourse. In the process of the interaction, emergent textual patterns develop and an adequate analysis of the patterns at both micro and macro as well as deep and surface levels of discourse will shed light on the true nature and pattern of human thinking and action. The author concludes that as metaphor has become entrenched in our conceptual system the study of metaphor as a complex adaptive system in discourse be conducted in its own right.

Book Description
Nobel Laureate and two-time Booker prize-winning author of Disgrace and The Life and Times of Michael K, J. M. Coetzee tells the remarkable story of a nation gripped in brutal apartheid in his Sunday Express Book of the Year award-winner Age of Iron. In Cape Town, South Africa, an elderly classics professor writes a letter to her distant daughter, recounting the strange and disturbing events of her dying days. She has been opposed to the lies and the brutality of apartheid all her life, but now she finds herself coming face to face with its true horrors: the hounding by the police of her servant's son, the burning of a nearby black township, the murder by security forces of a teenage activist who seeks refuge in her house. Through it all, her only companion, the only person to whom she can confess her mounting anger and despair, is a homeless man who one day appears on her doorstep. In Age of Iron, J. M. Coetzee brings his searing insight and masterful control of language to bear on one of the darkest episodes of our times. 'Quite simply a magnificent and unforgettable work' Daily Telegraph 'A superbly realized novel whose truth cuts to the bone' The New York Times 'A remarkable work by a brilliant writer' Wall Street Journal South African author J. M. Coetzee was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003 and was the first author to win the Booker Prize twice for his novels Disgrace and The Life and Times of Michael K. His novel, Foe, an exquisite reinvention of the story of Robinson Crusoe is also available in Penguin paperback.

On February 15, 2008, Carl started a poetry club, called Surf and Verse Poetry Club, and ran as Chairman and President. On March 15, 2008, Carl joined the Florida State Poets Association and sponsored his poetry club through them. In June 2008, he was nominated as Web Administrator for the organization and is still holding this vacancy. Carl opened Surf and Verse Poetry Club to the community in July 2009 and the name was changed to Fort Lauderdale Poets. Two months later, the club fell apart and no longer exists today. The Surf and Verse Poetry Club met twice a month and had a website during its active year. Shortly after the breaking of Surf and Verse Poetry Club, Carl began submitting his poems into editorials, newsletters, e-zines, and calls from different universities. In January 2010, God blessed Carl McKever to self-publish his first book of poetry, through InstantPublisher Book Services. After the publication of his book, he began writing new poems and his perspective towards others, who had passion for poetry, became intense. Carl visited many writing workshops and open-mike sessions throughout the State of Florida, and in August 2010, he was known as the Florida State Poetry Ambassador. In October 2010, he left Florida and moved to Dubuque, Iowa for a new job. Carl is still a resident of Dubuque and has joined the Iowa Poetry Association (IPA). He became an Area Representative for IPA and is still writing poems today. Recently, he self-published another book of poetry, called Poetic Expressions, through BowkerLink Book Publishing Company. He is still working on his press release and marketing his book through thousands of news companies. Carl has submitted a various amount of his poems to American Literary Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Literary Review of Canada, 95Notes (based in Chicago, Illinois), and many other e-zines. He started working on his autobiography in June 2009, but placed it on hold within the last couple of months. He plans on revising his current autobiography and self-publishing it at the age of 25 years. Carl also created a website to display some of his very own poetry and has many poetic goals he would like to achieve, such as establishing a poetry and writing group in his local community.

Book Description
A New York Times Editors' Choice "[T]he stuff of great literature." —The New York Times | "Red or Dead is a winner." —The Washington Post The place where the swinging sixties started – Liverpool, England, birthplace of the Beatles – wasn’t so swinging. Amid industrial blight and a bad economy, the port town’s shipping industry was going bust and there was widespread unemployment, with no assistance from a government tightening its belt. Even the Beatles moved to London. Into these hard times walked Bill Shankly, a former Scottish coal miner who took over the city’s perpetually last-place soccer team. He had a straightforward work ethic and a favorite song – a silly pop song done by a local band, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Soon he would have entire stadiums singing along, tens of thousands of people all dressed in the team color red . . . as Liverpool began to win . . . And soon, too, there was something else those thousands of people would chant as one: Shank-lee, Shank-lee . . . In Red or Dead, the acclaimed writer David Peace tells the stirring story of the real-life working-class hero who lifted the spirits of an entire city in turbulent times. But Red or Dead is more than a fictional biography of a real man, and more than a thrilling novel about sports. It is an epic novel that transcends those categories, until there’s nothing left to call it but – as many of the world’s leading newspapers already have – a masterpiece.
