How is “rhythm” experienced? What role does “rhythm” play in musicians’ search for a collective musical identity? These questions are answered in this book on the fascinating blend of musical styles and influences within contemporary Malagasy music. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, “the footprint between Africa and Asia,” with a history marked by many waves of migration. Over the centuries, a wide range of styles of music, of instruments and of dance have become a part of the island’s musical palette. Despite this and the resulting diversity of regional musical particularities, musicians claim there is one element they all share: a common rhythmical base. To explore this claim and the meaning of “rhythm” in the Malagasy context, Jenny Fuhr makes use of her dual role as musician and researcher. Self-reflexive field research combined with learning to play and perform Malagasy music enables a profound intercultural dialogue. This book shows how her intense involvement in music-making and a constant dialogue between musical experiences and discourses opens up new paths of understanding. In doing so, it challenges prevalent Western analytical perspectives on music and demonstrates the need for a more performance-based approach to ethnomusicology.

Jlmbulatory monitoring of signals, related to cardiovascular system per formances, is one of the biomedical technologies of wider interest. This interest is well documented by the literature, by the number of instruments available on the market and by the increasing diffusioo of this technique at routine clinical level. The wide distribution of ambulatory monitoring is however not yet well supported by commonly accepted criteria of clinical interpretation, by an assessment of the minimal requirements for instrumentation performances, or by indications of costjbenefit figures in relation to different situations. Several European centres have a recognized expertise and are well suited to the examinatioo of the problem of defining comnon guidelines and of making recommendations so as to stimulate an improvement of the clinical usage and of the performance of the instrumentation. The Biomedical Engineering Standing Group of the Committee for Medical and Public Health Research approved the organization of this \\Orksrop which had as its aims the assessment of the state-of-the-art of different aspects of ant>ulatory monitoring and the discussion within a group of experts of the feasibility and interest in promoting the coordination in Europe of these activities in the frame\\Ork of a "concerted action". The \\Orkshop was held in Pisa over two full days (April 11-12, 1983). The participants were physicians and engineers, experts in their fields.

Masters of the Sabar is the first book to examine the music and culture of Wolof griot percussionists, masters of the vibrant sabar drumming tradition. Based on extensive field research in Senegal, this book is a biographical study of several generations of percussionists in a Wolof griot (géwël) family, exploring and documenting their learning processes, repertories, and performance contexts—from life-cycle ceremonies to sporting events and political meetings. Patricia Tang examines the rich history and changing repertories of sabar drumming, including dance rhythms and bàkks, musical phrases derived from spoken words. She notes the recent shift towards creating new bàkks which are rhythmically more complex and highlight the virtuosity and musical skill of the percussionist. She also considers the burgeoning popular music genre called mbalax. The compact disc that accompanies the book includes examples of the standard sabar repertory, as well as bàkks composed and performed by Lamine Touré and his family drum troupe.
