In order to make the shipping of hazardous industrial fluids safer, a complete understanding of the actual phenomena inside tank cars under external fire conditions is necessary. This report presents the results of a study to obtain vapour heat transfer coefficients of a partially filled horizontal cylinder with and without an internal protection system (EXPLOSAFE) under simulated fire conditions, using a constant electrical power input. Wall and vapour temperatures as well as pressure histories as a function of time were obtained for a partially filled horizontal cylinder of Freon-11. Heating of the vessel from 10-65 kW/sq m, with 3 liquid levels (76, 58 and 23%) and 2 pressure relief valve orifice diameters (6.4 mm and 9.5 mm) permitted fluid behaviour observation and estimation of the vapour space heat transfer coefficients.

Boiling liquid expanding vapour explosions (BLEVEs) occur when a pressure-liquefied gas tank is burst and the fluid is ejected to the atmosphere. As the liquid is exposed to a lower pressure it boils violently, causing an explosion which destroys the container. This report describes the continuing program of research at the University of New Brunswick involving small scale experiments and collaborating associations. To study the thermohydraulics behaviour of a partially-filled pressure-liquified gas tank engulfed in fire and devise test protection strategies for transport and storage containers, an experimental apparatus simulating (under controlled conditions) the postulated incident was utilized. The tank was fitted with windows for visual observation and photography. Measurements were taken of wall temperatures and lading temperatures as well as tank pressure, tank mass and efflux thrust exerted by the PRV discharge.
