Book Description
The tables present the results of computations of the intensity and the degree of polarization of sky radiation and radiation scattered by a unit volume of air containing natural aerosols. The tabulated data are based upon new values of the scattering functions i sub 1 and i sub 2 and the scattering cross sections k, derived using the Mie theory with m = 1.5. In the case of primary scattering of radiation, the results are valid for a turbid atmosphere. The tables of the scattering coefficients and optical thickness, the absolute scattering functions, the intensities, and the degrees of polarization are computed for various wavelengths between 0.4 and 1.2 microns and for discrete scattering angles between 0 and 180 degrees. Aerosol size distributions of the form dn(r) = c.r/v dlogr, with v = 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0, are assumed. The lower and upper limits for the size range were chosen as r sub 1 = 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08 micron and r sub 2 = 3,5, and 10 microns respectively. (Author).

Book Description
Light Scattering in Planetary Atmospheres details the theory of radiative transfer for anisotropic scattering. The title emphasizes more on the theoretical aspects, and such focuses more on the fundamental concepts and basic principles rather than the practical application. The text first presents the basic equations, and then proceeds to tackling specific concepts in the subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 discusses the semi-infinite atmospheres, while Chapter 3 tackles atmospheres of finite optical thickness. Next, the selection talks about atmospheres overlying a reflecting surface. The next two chapters in the title discuss the general theory. The seventh chapter details the linear integral equation, while the eighth chapter covers the approximate formulas. The text also deals with the determination of the physical characteristics of planetary atmospheres, along with the theory of radiative transfer in spherical atmospheres. The book will be of great use to scientists involved in the study of celestial bodies, such as astronomers and astrophysicists.

Book Description
The trichromatic coefficients of light emerging from the top of a plane parallel, purely scattering Rayleigh (molecular) atmosphere have been computed. The extraterrestrial illumination from the sun is approximated with illumination from the CIE standard illuminant C. The ground is assumed to reflect radiation according to the Lambert law. The results are expressed in terms of the dominant wavelength and associated values of excitation purity. It is found that when the diffuse reflectivity of the ground assumes moderate to high values (0.25 to 0.8), the excitation purity of the emergent light is so small as to cause an overall 'neutral grey' or 'neutral white' appearance. On the other hand when the ground is non reflecting or when the diffuse reflectivity is very low, the dominant wavelength of the emergent radiation lies in the blue region and the associated excitation purity exhibits fairly high values (40%). It is possible that computations such as the above, when extended to more realistic models of the atmosphere, may find application in problems related to color-photographic reconnaissance from high altitudes. Book Description
Rayleigh scattering intensities in the altitude range of 80-300 km are calculated using the concentrations of the principal atmospheric constituents N2, O2 and O. The polarizability of the oxygen atom is calculated from atomic oscillator strengths and normal and slant optical thicknesses are calculated as a function of altitude. (Author).

Book Description
This book presents the theory and applications of radiative transfer in the atmosphere. It is written for graduate students and researchers in the fields of meteorology and related sciences. The book begins with important basic definitions of the radiative transfer theory. It presents the hydrodynamic derivation of the radiative transfer equation and the principles of variance. The authors examine in detail various quasi-exact solutions of the radiative transfer equation and give a thorough treatment of the radiative perturbation theory. A rigorous treatment of Mie scattering is given, including Rayleigh scattering as a special case, and the important efficiency factors for extinction, scattering and absorption are derived. The fundamentals of remote sensing applications of radiative transfer are presented. Problems of varying degrees of difficulty are included at the end of each chapter, allowing readers to further their understanding of the materials covered in the book.
