Book Description
I want to take this opportunity to apologize, in advance, to all those people who are sure to be offended by my novel TAAS: A NOVEL OF THE STANDARDIZED EXAMINATION, even if they have not read it and do not intend reading it. I don't really even know why I wrote it: it just slipped out one night (probably while I was drunk), and I couldn't get it back. I also want to apologize especially to Rick Baber, who honestly thought he was publishing a sequel to Anna Karenina, and only learned much later that it was really TAAS. In addition, my deepest regrets and apologies go to:(They are not listed alphabetically but just how they come into my mind. I am so sorry for that.) The state of Texas All public school teachers All public school students Wal-Mart Count Leo Tolstoy and his descendants Coldwell Banker Realtors The nation of Mexico The nation of FranceThe National Drug Awareness Council (if one exists, which I'm pretty sure it does but I don't know. I'm sorry for not knowing.) George W. Bush Texas A&M University (for so many things) The makers of the movies Rudy, Rudy II, Rudy III, Rudy IV, Scream, and the soon to be released cartoon feature Disembowelment. The Habsburgs The Cathedral of Notre Dame The National Geographic Magazine Darrell Royal The Christian Religion The Methodist Religion The makers of piñatas The Football Coaches of America Association Percy Bysse Shelley Wolfgang Amadeus MozartThe American Association of Funeral Homes and Mortuaries ....and finally, to my family, who now will have to live the rest of their lives in shame. I'm so, so sorry... (Name Withheld)

Book Description
Parents and community activists around the country complain that the education system is failing our children. They point to students' failure to master basic skills, even as standardized testing is widely employed in efforts to improve the educational system. Contradictions of Reform is a provocative look into the reality, for students as well as teachers, of standardized testing. A detailed account of how student improvement and teacher effectiveness are evaluated, Contradictions of Reform argues compellingly that the preparation of students for standardized tests engenders teaching methods that vastly compromise the quality of education.

Book Description
Do your students or patrons ever ask you about African Americans in sports? How about African American Academy Award winners? Or perhaps you′re asked about more complex social issues regarding the unemployment rate among African Americans, or the number of African American men on death row? If these questions sound familiar, the Encyclopedia of African American Society is a must-have for your library. This two-volume reference seeks to capture the ways in which the tenets and foundations of African American culture have given rise to today′s society. Approaching the field from a "street level" perspective, these two volumes cover topics of universal interest in America: rap music, sports, television, cinema, racism, religion, literature, and much more. The Encyclopedia of African American Society is also the first comprehensive yet accessible reference set in this field to give voice to the turbulent historical trends–slavery, segregation, "separate but equal"–that are often ignored in favor of mere facts. This is a definitive, reliable, and accessible entry point to learning the basics about African American society. The encyclopedia is anchored by alphabetically arranged essays on such topics as abolitionism, affirmative action, and the civil rights movement. More than just a "who′s who", these volumes emphasize social issues and events—those filled with significance and consequence through history. Civil Rights, economic growth, law and justice, and politics—with all of their numerous subcategories—receive substantial coverage. The encyclopedia naturally contains hundreds of articles on notable African Americans (Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, Miles Davis), groundbreaking events (Emancipation Proclamation, Los Angeles Riots), sports and culture (Rap Music, Jazz), and significant heritage sites (Apollo Theater). This much needed two-volume encyclopedia should become a staple in collections at school, public, and academic libraries. Readers of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnic or racial groups will find fascinating material on every page. Key Features Nearly 700 signed articles Almost 50 photographs Complete list of African Americans in sports Halls of Fame Cross-referenced for easy links from one topic to another Reader′s guide facilitates easy browsing for relevant articles Clear, accessible writing style appropriate for high school and college students and interested lay readers Comprehensive index and bibliography Topics Covered Concepts and Theories Fine Arts, Theater, and Entertainment Health and Education History and Heritage Literature Media Movements and Events Music and Dance Organizations and Institutions Places Politics and Policy Popular Culture Religion and Beliefs The Road to Freedom Science, Technology, and Business Social Issues Special Populations Sports Advisory Board Sherri L. Book Description
While high school drop-out rates have steadily declined among white and African American students over the 1970s and 1980s a constant 35 percent of Latino students continued to quit school before graduation. In this pioneering work, Harriett Romo and Toni Falbo reveal how a group of at-risk Latino students defied the odds and earned a high school diploma. Romo and Falbo tracked the progress of 100 students in Austin, Texas, from 1989 to 1993. Drawing on interviews with the students and their parents, school records, and fieldwork in the schools and communities, the authors identify both the obstacles that caused many students to drop out and the successful strategies that other students and their parents pursued to ensure high school graduation. The authors conclude with seven far-reaching recommendations for changes in the public schools. Sure to provoke debate among all school constituencies, this book will be required reading for school administrators, teachers, parents, legislators, and community leaders.
