While his operas and songs have become embedded in the cultural heritage of his native Denmark, internationally he is better known for his symphonies and concertos distinguished by his prominent use of Brass instruments and dramatic changes in tonality. His Symphony No.5 (Op. 50, FS. 97) was composed in 1922, and is often seen as his "War Symphony", despite the composer denying any such direct influence. Strangely, it is formed of only two movements, and does not have any title. Often said to be a modernist piece, it is constantly restless, some would say pulsating. Brought to fame by Leonard Bernstein in 1962, scholars and musicians arestill trying to understand this enigmatic work.

George Frederick Bristow (1825–98), considered by many of his contemporaries to be among the best American composers of the second half of the nineteenth century, was a pillar of the New York musical community. He wrote his Symphony no. 4 in E minor, op. 50 (“Arcadian”), in 1872–73 on a commission from the Philharmonic Society of Brooklyn. Unlike his earlier symphonies, which had been faulted by some contemporary critics as being too “Europeanist,” the Arcadian follows an overtly American extramusical program that depicts pioneers’ trek across the country. Early performances of the symphony met with widespread acclaim, but this work, like many compositions by other American composers, was shelved. This edition is the first publication of the Arcadian Symphony and joins a welcome body of new scholarship on Bristow just in time for the bicentennial of his birth in 2025 and the two hundred fiftieth birthday of the nation in 2026.

Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composers’ thinking and their socio-cultural contexts.
