Book Description
(Score). Symphony No.5 Op.50 was composed by Carl Nielsen in 1922. Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish musician, often seen as his country s greatest composer. While his operas and songs have become embedded in the cultural heritage of his native Denmark, internationally he is better known for his symphonies and concertos distinguished by his prominent use of Brass instruments and dramatic changes in tonality. His Symphony No.5 (Op. 50, FS. 97) was composed in 1922, and is often seen as his "War Symphony", despite the composer denying any such direct influence. Strangely, it is formed of only two movements, and does not have any title. Often said to be a modernist piece, it is constantly restless, some would say pulsating. Brought to fame by Leonard Bernstein in 1962, scholars and musicians arestill trying to understand this enigmatic work.

Nielsen: Symphony No. 5
Author: David Fanning
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521446327
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 140
Book Description
After the death of Mahler in 1911 the great Austro-German symphonic line was carried on mainly in England, America, Scandinavia and Russia. The Fifth Symphony of Carl Nielsen, a Danish composer, was composed in 1921. David Fanning discusses its place within the symphonic tradition since Beethoven, revealing the personal background to the work and taking account of the extensive Danish commentaries, including the composer's own. In an analysis of the music he lays bare the origins of its images of inertia, anxiety and collapse in Nielsen's tone poems and incidental music for the theatre. Insights are offered into the symphony's progressive tonality and its relationship to traditional structural models.

Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 50 ("Arcadian")
Author: George Frederick Bristow
Publisher: A-R Editions, Inc.
ISBN: 1987208943
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
George Frederick Bristow (1825–98), considered by many of his contemporaries to be among the best American composers of the second half of the nineteenth century, was a pillar of the New York musical community. He wrote his Symphony no. 4 in E minor, op. 50 (“Arcadian”), in 1872–73 on a commission from the Philharmonic Society of Brooklyn. Unlike his earlier symphonies, which had been faulted by some contemporary critics as being too “Europeanist,” the Arcadian follows an overtly American extramusical program that depicts pioneers’ trek across the country. Early performances of the symphony met with widespread acclaim, but this work, like many compositions by other American composers, was shelved. This edition is the first publication of the Arcadian Symphony and joins a welcome body of new scholarship on Bristow just in time for the bicentennial of his birth in 2025 and the two hundred fiftieth birthday of the nation in 2026.

Two Centuries of British Symphonism

Book Description
Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composers’ thinking and their socio-cultural contexts. A comprehensive catalogue of all known works and an extensive bibliography invite readers to delve further into the subject.

Holberg Suite
Author:
Publisher: Alfred Music Publishing
ISBN: 9780769279404
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 36
Book Description
"Aus Holbergs Zeit, Suite im alten Stil, Op.40" - now more commonly known as the "Holberg Suite" - was written in 1884 for the 200th anniversary celebration of playwright Ludvig Holberg's birth. Originally for piano, the composer scored it for strings the following year, conducting the newly-completed arrangement at a March concert in Bergen. The Suite consists of a Prelude and four dances characteristic of the 18th century. The work was meant to capture the feel of the era of Holberg's lifetime and has become one of Grieg's most beloved and performed works, especially in the present setting for strings. This new edition by Richard W. Sargeant, Jr. has been thoroughly researched to bring you a beautiful score as the composer intended it.
