Book Description
Alicia Givens is a beautiful, full-figured 23 year old woman with an amazing voice. She sings like an angel. She's on her way to try and make it as a singer. Her friend, Shaunice Weathersby, has been her best friend since elementary school. Alicia feels she's always been the 'big girl' with the bubbly personality, yet she still has a few self esteem issues. She settles for guys who basically play around with her feelings until she finally gets tired of the game. Shaunice wants Alicia to find someone who values her and not Maurice Gibbs, who Alicia has been seeing. Alicia understands that Shaunice doesn't like Maurice, but Alicia feels she owes him a lot due to the fact that he has been trying to get her singing career off the ground as her manager as well as her boyfriend. Shaunice thinks Maurice is complete trash. Alicia is aware but she's so attracted so much to Maurice: the sex is good and he makes promises of getting her noticed by being her manager. Shaunice doesn't trust Maurice at all and is willing to get Alicia to see him for who he really is. As luck would have it, Maurice is able to get Alicia an audition with the CFE group, owned by Marcus Harper and Franklin Studdard (That's Why I Love You) and things take off. Even after getting Alicia noticed, Maurice doesn't change his ways. Instead he gets worse. Fate steps in and opens Alicia's eyes along with the help of others playing 'Cupid' and she finds someone who shows her how she should be treated. Alicia finds herself torn between the person who was with her from the start of her career and a person who makes her feel like a Queen. She wants to move on, yet Maurice isn't ready to let her go just yet. Will Alicia allow herself to be love the way she deserves? Will Maurice go away after all of the work he had done for Alicia? **This is a Stand-Alone book. If you want to know the story behind Marcus and Siedah - their story starts in THAT'S WHY I LOVE YOU and continues in LIKE I WANT YOU**

Plants, Health and Healing
Author: Elisabeth Hsu
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 0857456334
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
Plants have cultural histories, as their applications change over time and with place. Some plant species have affected human cultures in profound ways, such as the stimulants tea and coffee from the Old World, or coca and quinine from South America. Even though medicinal plants have always attracted considerable attention, there is surprisingly little research on the interface of ethnobotany and medical anthropology. This volume, which brings together (ethno-)botanists, medical anthropologists and a clinician, makes an important contribution towards filling this gap. It emphasises that plant knowledge arises situationally as an intrinsic part of social relationships, that herbs need to be enticed if not seduced by the healers who work with them, that herbal remedies are cultural artefacts, and that bioprospecting and medicinal plant discovery can be viewed as the epitome of a long history of borrowing, stealing and exchanging plants.

Taste of Honey
Author: Marie Simmons
Publisher: Andrews Mcmeel+ORM
ISBN: 1449446914
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 195
Book Description
A comprehensive cookbook and guide to honey “packed with good recipes [from] one of the absolute best food writers around” (Mollie Katzen, author of Moosewood Cookbook). Honey is a lot like olive oil: How do you know what type to select at the farmers’ market or store? Are all honey bears created equal? What makes one variety different from another? Which is better for baking or best for savory dishes? Why is one darker than another, and what does that mean? These questions and more are answered in Taste of Honey. Marie Simmons reveals the life of a bee, and how the terroir of its habitat influences both the color and flavor of the honey it produces. Then she explains how these flavor profiles are best paired with certain ingredients in over sixty sweet and savory recipes including: Snacks and Breakfast: Flatbread with Melted Manchego, Rosemary and Honey; Honey, Scallion and Cheddar Scones; Honey French Toast with Peaches with Honey and Mint Main Dishes: Crispy Coconut Shrimp with Tangy Honey Dipping Sauce; Salmon with Honey, Miso and Ginger Glaze; Baby Back Ribs with Chipotle Honey Barbecue Sauce Salads and Vegetable Side Dishes: Pear, Stilton and Bacon Salad with Honey Dressing and Honey Glazed Pecans; Mango and Celery Salad with Honey and Lime Dressing; Roasted Eggplant Slices with Warmed Feta and Honey Drizzle Sweets: Honey Pear Tart with Honey Butter Sauce; Chunky Peanut Butter and Honey Cookies; Honey Zabaglione; Honey Panna Cotta; Micki’s Special Honey Fudge Brownies Each recipe includes a guide for the type of honey that will work best with it, and ideas to experiment with. In addition, there are fast, simple things to do with honey at the end of each recipe chapter; a glossary covering forty different varietals of honey; information about its healing properties; and tidbits about bees and honey through history. Photos by Meg Smith capture the intimate life of the bee and its activity producing honey—along with the gorgeous food you can make with it. “Holy honey! Taste of Honey, with its lush photos and delectable recipes, not only teaches how to best use single-origin honey in the kitchen, it reminds us that honey is an almost magical substance, connecting us to our landscape, and to the hardworking honey bee. Marie Simmons’s book has made robbing the hive even sweeter.” —Novella Carpenter, author of Farm City “I’m a honey collector, too, but unlike Marie, I tend to stick to a drizzle of honey over cheese, toast, or hot cereal and the occasional dessert. There are so many more ideas here for using honey . . . And I do hope that the appeal of honey itself with lead us to care more for our struggling bee populations.” —Deborah Madison, author of Local Flavors

A Problem of Presence
Author: Matthew Engelke
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520940040
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
The Friday Masowe apostolics of Zimbabwe refer to themselves as "the Christians who don’t read the Bible." They claim they do not need the Bible because they receive the Word of God "live and direct" from the Holy Spirit. In this insightful and sensitive historical ethnography, Matthew Engelke documents how this rejection of scripture speaks to longstanding concerns within Christianity over mediation and authority. The Bible, of course, has been a key medium through which Christians have recognized God’s presence. But the apostolics perceive scripture as an unnecessary, even dangerous, mediator. For them, the materiality of the Bible marks a distance from the divine and prohibits the realization of a live and direct faith. Situating the Masowe case within a broad comparative framework, Engelke shows how their rejection of textual authority poses a problem of presence—which is to say, how the religious subject defines, and claims to construct, a relationship with the spiritual world through the semiotic potentials of language, actions, and objects. Written in a lively and accessible style, A Problem of Presence makes important contributions to the anthropology of Christianity, the history of religions in Africa, semiotics, and material culture studies.

Materiality
Author: Daniel Miller
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 0822386712
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 303
Book Description
Throughout history and across social and cultural contexts, most systems of belief—whether religious or secular—have ascribed wisdom to those who see reality as that which transcends the merely material. Yet, as the studies collected here show, the immaterial is not easily separated from the material. Humans are defined, to an extraordinary degree, by their expressions of immaterial ideals through material forms. The essays in Materiality explore varied manifestations of materiality from ancient times to the present. In assessing the fundamental role of materiality in shaping humanity, they signal the need to decenter the social within social anthropology in order to make room for the material. Considering topics as diverse as theology, technology, finance, and art, the contributors—most of whom are anthropologists—examine the many different ways in which materiality has been understood and the consequences of these differences. Their case studies show that the latest forms of financial trading instruments can be compared with the oldest ideals of ancient Egypt, that the promise of software can be compared with an age-old desire for an unmediated relationship to divinity. Whether focusing on the theology of Islamic banking, Australian Aboriginal art, derivatives trading in Japan, or textiles that respond directly to their environment, each essay adds depth and nuance to the project that Materiality advances: a profound acknowledgment and rethinking of one of the basic properties of being human. Contributors. Matthew Engelke, Webb Keane, Susanne Küchler, Bill Maurer, Lynn Meskell, Daniel Miller, Hirokazu Miyazaki, Fred Myers, Christopher Pinney, Michael Rowlands, Nigel Thrift
