Book Description
Upinder Singh urges us to abandon simplistic stereotypes and instead think of ancient India in terms of the coexistence of five powerful contradictions-between social inequality and promises of universal salvation, the valorization of desire and detachment, goddess worship and misogyny, violence and non-violence, and religious debate and conflict. She does so using a vast array of sources including religious and philosophical texts, epics, poetry, plays, technical treatises, satire, biographies, and inscriptions, as well as the material and aesthetic evidence of archaeology and art from sites across the subcontinent. Singh's scholarly but highly accessible style, clear explanation, and balanced interpretations offer an understanding of the historian's craft and unravel the many threads of what we think of as ancient Indian culture. This is not a dead or forgotten past but one invoked in different contexts even today. Further, in spite of enormous historical changes over the centuries, the contradictions discussed here still remain.

Book Description
Vinoba was a devout person. He was spirituality personified. His rigorous effort to explore and unearth the hidden values of these ancient scriptures led him to select one eight of the entire Rig-veda which contained its in-depth meaning. This was brought out in a book-form under the title 'Rig-veda-Sar (The essence of Rig-veda). Just few days before the end of his earthly sojourn, Vinoba underlined the importance of the selected eighty-three mantras (verses) from 'Rig-veda Sar' and suggested regular recitation of these mantras along with 'Gitai' (the Marathi rendition of the Bhagwad Gita). The publisher found his comments on some of them scattered in his voluminous literary works. These comments have been compiled and edited into a book titled 'Vedamrut' in Hindi and now translated in English. This is a small book, rich in spiritual wisdom handed down by one who exemplified the tradition of the Vedic seers in this modern material age. It is certain that even a small drop of this wisdom will benefit every one of us in our spiritual quest.

Book Description
The authors of Indian Political Thinking set out to critically compare and contrast the major ideas and frequently used terminology of classical and contemporary Indian political thought. It examines the Ramayana as well as the Mahabharata from the perspective of ancient Indian thinking, paying particular attention to the perspectives of Manu as well as Kautilya. This then goes on to classify the major political schools of thought within contemporary Indian philosophy. When introducing each school of thought, we discuss the major theoretical questions at play in that school's methodology and the significant intellectual contributions made by individual thinkers. In addition to Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose and Jawaharlal Nehru, the social and political ideas of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekanand, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay, Tarabai Shinde, Savtribai Phule, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, M.N. Roy, Japaprakash Narayan, Sri Aurobindo, Ram Manohar Lohia, Pandita Ramabai, and Dr. Ambedkar have also been highlighted. It really is hoped that an unbiased and impartial evaluation of the contributions of various thinkers and schools of thought may be achieved. This book has been written in quite an accessible and straightforward manner, and it includes a number of special elements that will appeal to its target audience. It is written with both Indian university students and the casual reader in mind.

This book is a dovetail of Tilak's thoughts and the concept of self-reliance.
