Book Description
The survey concentrates on macroeconomic issues pursuant to Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) resolution 270 on macroeconomic policy for financial stability, which recognized the urgent need to analyze the short-term economic effects and the long-term possible consequence of the current oil boom. It draws lessons from the previous oil boom and charts the policy landscape in search of alternatives that can retain financial and human resources aimed at meeting the requisites of development as a human right and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Book Description
This year's Survey looks at the effect that the global financial crisis has had on economies and social development in the Western Asia region. The Survey shows that while some economies have weathered the global recession well, the impact on others has been significant. It is possible that the negative economic and social consequences of the crisis on employment, poverty, health, education, gender equality and growth will be felt for some time. The 2011 revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and other countires are unprecedented in their dynamics. The consequences of these changes will only become apparent as events unfold. A new model of economic development in the region is emerging and it is critical that it responds to the aspirations of the people who have led these revolutions.

Book Description
The Survey of Economic and Social Development in the ESCWA Region 2011-2012 assesses the most recent economic and social developments in the ESCWA region, using the data that became available by the 2nd quarter of 2012. It found that GDP growth performance between major oil producers and the rest of the ESCWA region appeared to diverge. While GCC countries' oil export revenues marked all-time high, the subdued intra-regional tourism, trade and foreign direct investment clearly failed to produce the positive spill-over of oil revenues over the ESCWA region. It emphasizes that this growth polarization deepens already uncertain prospects of the region's economic and social development, noting that the unemployment rate of the ESCWA region remains at the highest level world-wide. The Survey concludes that the use of "regional leverage" by articulating regional cooperation frameworks for Arab regional integration is crucial to tackle pressing issues for a constructive economic and social transition of the region.
