From forty to sixty years ago, as the growth of psychology began to catch up with human needs, applications were established independently and almost concurrently in a university clinic, a clinic for delinquents, a school for the feeble-minded, and a state mental hospital. Clinical psychology did not originate in one kind of setting and slowly spread to the others. Its multiple roots are of long standing. In its several places of origin the essential processes of psychol ogy were what they are today, the assessment and remedy of human troubles, together with research to increase the breadth of understanding and the value of techniques.
