Progress in Parkinson Research
Author: Franz Hefti
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461307597
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
In the past five years significant progress has been made in our basic and clinical under standing of Parkinson's disease. The discovery that MPTP, a relatively simple molecule, is able to induce parkinsonism in otherwise healthy adult humans, and the recent interest in the possibility of "transplantation" procedures as a therapeutic modality in the treatment of Parkin son's disease have generated enormous interest in research related to Parkinson's disease. In this setting, the National Parkinson Foundation decided to organize a research meeting to bring together scientists actively engaged in research relevant to the study of Parkinson's disease, to accelerate its progress and to promote an exchange of ideas. This meeting took place in Janu ary 1988 at Key Biscayne, Florida. Author: Hunt Janin
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786459565
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 221
Book Description
The fundamental point of this book is that, in the past, the world's political, economic, military and social development took place during a time of relatively stable sea level. That time, however, is now over: The world must begin to cope with rising seas. This book is a wide-ranging introductory survey. It addresses global warming, the hydrologic cycle, why we should care about the rise of the oceans, storm surges and other extreme events, the changing seas and their shorelines, cities and countries of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian ocean basins, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Greenland Ice Sheet, case studies on how the Netherlands and the U.S. plan to cope with sea level rise, the likely impacts of this rise, getting to know the experts on sea level rise, and very long term prospects for the world's shorelines.

Visual Masking
Author: Bruno Breitmeyer
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191546208
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 384
Book Description
Our visual system can process information at both conscious and unconscious levels. Understanding the factors that control whether a stimulus reaches our awareness, and the fate of those stimuli that remain at an unconscious level, are the major challenges of brain science in the new millennium. Since its publication in 1984, Visual Masking has established itself as a classic text in the field of cognitive psychology. In the years since, there have been considerable advances in the cognitive neurosciences, and a growth of interest in the topic of consciousness, and the time is ripe for a new edition of this text. Where most current approaches to the study of visual consciousness adopt a 'steady-state' view, the approach presented in this book explores its dynamic properties. This new edition uses the technique of visual masking to explore temporal aspects of conscious and unconscious processes down to a resolution in the millisecond range. The 'time slices' through conscious and unconscious vision revealed by the visual masking technique can shed light on both normal and abnormal operations in the brain. The main focus of this book is on the microgenesis of visual form and pattern perception - microgenesis referring to the processes occurring in the visual system from the time of stimulus presentation on the retinae to the time, a few hundred milliseconds later, of its registration at conscious or unconscious perceptual and behavioural levels. The book takes a highly integrative approach by presenting microgenesis within a broad context encompassing visuo-temporal phenomena, attention, and consciousness.
