The epidemics and pandemics which affect supply chains include MERS; H1N1; SARS; Ebola; Zika; and the Spanish Flu. The most recent pandemic which has affected supply chains is COVID-19. Global partners of businesses, or global connections between industries, were disrupted due to COVID-19 (Choi, Rogers, & Vakil, 2020). Common effects include factory closures, work backlog, and supply issues. The hardest hit industries include retail, transportation, and travel (Suneson, 2020). Suneson (2020) stated that manufacturing, logistics, and medical supply are also affected by the pandemic. This research compares COVID-19 and other pandemics/epidemics. Major patterns include a cost-perspective and a focus on manufacturing. There are trends of 3D printing, ecommerce, and a new approach to supply. This research will help businesses see how their supply chains could be affected, and contributes actionable recommendations to the field. This research can help supply chains stay stable during COVID-19, and help companies gain a competitive advantage. It is recommended that businesses try to have backup suppliers in an unaffected area. Businesses should change work policies based on the COVID-19 environment. Production line structures and factories should support efficiency. Economies of scale should be integrated into the outline of business processes. Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) is also recommended. There are also recommendations for specific stages. Collaboration, and insight into business specific supply chain conditions, are needed to implement these recommendations.
