Economic Revitalization
Author: Joan Fitzgerald
Publisher: SAGE Publications
ISBN: 150632066X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 281
Book Description
Economic Revitalization is unique in that it discusses leading revitalization strategies in the context of both city and suburban settings, offering case studies of program development and implementation. In Economic Revitalization: Cases and Strategies for City and Suburb Fitzgerald and Leigh answer the need for a text that incorporates social justice and sustainability into how we think about and practice economic development. It is one of the first to talk about how revitalization strategies are implemented in both cities and suburbs, particularly inner-ring suburbs that are experiencing decline previously associated only with inner-city neighborhoods. After setting the context with a brief history of economic development practice and its shortcomings, Fitzgerald and Leigh focus on six economic development strategies: sectoral strategies, Brownfield redevelopment, industrial retention, commercial revitalization, industrial and office property reuse, and workforce development. Each of these chapters begins with an overview of the strategy and then presents cases of how it is being implemented. The cases draw from Atlanta, Chicago and its suburbs, Emeryville, Kalamazoo, Louisville, New Haven, Portland, Sandy Springs, and Seattle (and suburban King County). They illustrate the tradeoffs often made in achieving one goal at the expense of another. Although they admit that some of the cases come up short in illustrating a more equitable and sustainable economic development practice, Fitzgerald and Leigh conclude with an optimistic view that the field is changing. The book is aimed at students and practitioners of economic development planning who seek to foster stronger economies and greater opportunity in inner cites and older suburbs. It is also meant to assist planners in thriving new towns and suburban communities seeking to avoid future economic decline as their communities mature. Economic Revitalization: Discusses practice in both suburban and inner-city settings Integrates the planning values of social justice and sustainability into the discussion of implementation strategies Includes cases that reveal the political nature of the planning process and the types of tradeoffs that often must be made Provides insights for planners seeking to adopt "best practice" programs from other localities

Building Healthy Corridors: Transforming Urban and Suburban Arterials Into Thriving Places
Author: Sara Hammerschmidt
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780874203936
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 55
Book Description
Corridor redevelopment is not a new topic. Various planning and design approaches--such as complete streets, living streets, and livable streets--aim to redevelop commercial corridors to meet more of their users' needs, including their need for walking and biking rather than just traveling by car. A marked difference between a healthy corridors approach and other approaches is that the former looks beyond just the street and considers how the street supports the daily needs of all who live, work, and travel along it. Building Healthy Corridors: Transforming Urban and Suburban Arterials into Thriving Places takes a comprehensive view and considers how the corridor contributes to the overall health of the surrounding community, including community members' opportunities to be physically active. It also considers safety, housing affordability, transportation options, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion as well as modifications that would link residents to the corridor and improve connections to jobs and adjacent parts of the community.

Commercial Corridor Improvements on Mays Street in Round Rock, Texas
Author: Nicole Capri Haggerty

ISBN:

Pages : 150
Book Description
Suburban cities across the United States are continuing to redevelop and revitalize neighborhoods and commercial areas to meet the changing needs of their communities. Commercial corridors, which can be characterized by retail strip centers, curb cuts and driveways, commercial signs, and sparse pedestrian infrastructure, have become a focus of revitalization efforts. In Round Rock, Texas, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country with a population of approximately 120,000, the City Council has recently become interested in improvements to one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors. This report focuses on a one-mile segment of Mays Street, a north-south commercial corridor in Round Rock, Texas. A qualitative analysis of existing conditions provides an understanding of the physical conditions, regulatory structure, and the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for the corridor. A study of current literature presents best practices for community engagement, as well as ideas from Complete Streets, Smart Growth, and Tactical Urbanism approaches as they relate to commercial corridors. Case studies from San Antonio, McAllen, and Pearland, Texas and Shoreline, Washington demonstrate best practices and lessons learned that could be applied to the Mays Street Corridor. Key findings show that there are both physical planning interventions and regulatory changes that cities can use to address commercial corridor concerns. Recommendations for the Mays Street Corridor are provided based on the existing conditions, literature review, and case studies. If improvements are successful along the Mays Street Corridor are considered to be successful, the same strategies can be applied to other commercial corridors in Round Rock. The report concludes with a summary lessons learned and next steps

Book Description
Just as retail strips once drained business from traditional downtowns, now lifestyle centers and other concentrated retailing experiences are leaving a trail of disinvestment along many aging commercial corridors. Revitalizing these strips often requires a deliberate restructuring of the corridor to create spaces that match new market demands and community needs. This PAS Essential Information Packet provides articles and guidebooks showing how communities can use public investments and private development regulations to divide commercial corridors into distinct segments with concentrated nodes of mixed use development. The packet also contains examples of local plans and development regulations written specifically to encourage redevelopment along aging commercial corridors.
