Over the last forty years much has been published on the sedimentary geology of Great Bear River area. The discoveries of oil in the Devonian reef at Norman Wells and in cambrian sands at Tedji Lake have attested to the area's hydrocarbon potential. Surface mapping and local studies have revealed rock sequences and crustal structures of great potential value to our understanding of global geology. The aim of this report is to assist evaluation of the economic potential and to improve the interpretation of the geological history. Based o n subsurface data, the stratigraphy and structure of the area and analyzed in detail and are illustrated on a series of maps and cross-sections, and nomenclature is reviewed and integrated regionally with that of adjacent areas.

Previous studies of the lower Palaeozoic in the Eagle Plain & Richardson Mountain area of north-west mainland Canada in the Yukon & Northwest Territories have dealt either with outcrop or surface sections, or with subsurface well sections, but did not integrate these data. This has led to the development of inconsistent stratigraphic nomenclatures and an inability to form a consistent sequence stratigraphic model for the lower Palaeozoic in this area. This bulletin presents a stratigraphic synthesis based on data from surface exposures in the mountains surrounding Eagle Plain and on subsurface borehole data from beneath Eagle Plain and from the interior plain bordering the east flank of the Richardson Mountains. An internally consistent stratigraphic framework is developed, including reaffirmation of some previous nomenclature, restriction to certain areas of others, and definition of new stratigraphic units. The positions of carbonate-to-shale transitions which commonly exert a strong control on structural evolution and on the occurrence of sedimentary mineral deposits & hydrocarbons are more accurately delineated. A detailed sedimentological analysis of the Ogilvie Formation, the most prospective lower Palaeozoic unit for the occurrence of hydrocarbon reservoirs, is also included, along with a map of thermal maturity at the top of the unit.

This volume contains four papers that report on a wide range of geoscientific activities related to various rare-metal deposits in the Northwest Territories. Two papers represent the results of work carried out on the Blatchford Lake intrusive suite and the associated Thor Lake rare-metal deposits of niobium, tantalum, beryllium, yttrium, rare-earth elements, and gallium. A detailed gravity survey and computer modelling provides an understanding of the three dimensional geometry of the 23 km wide Blatchford Lake. Another paper summarizes some of the extensive pegmatite research done by the University of Manitoba in the Northwest Territories during the 1980s, providing information on the geological setting, geochemistry, and economic potential of four previously undocumented or poorly known rare-element pegmatite occurrences at Ayler Lake, Torp Lake, Chantry Inlet, and the Foxe fields in the Rae Province. Another paper presents a thorough documentation of the geological settings, characteristics, and metallogeny of selected mineral occurrences in the southern part of the Proterozoic Great Bear magnetic zone.
