Book Description
Analyses are being made of the response of containment vessels. Approximate burst strengths of finite cylinders with various end conditions were determined. The behavior of the infinite cylindrical shell under dynamic loads was studied. The effects of openings on the strength of vessels are being investigated. The effects of a central rigid insert on the strength of a flat circular membrane were determined. Materials are being fabricated for bulging experiments on pressurized cylinders of finite length. A containment handbook is being prepared. (M.C.G.).

Book Description
In the program for analysis of containment vessel response in the range approaching failure, an approximate analysis method was used for application to the solution of cylinders with rigid bases and hemispherical heads. The solution for approximate burst strength is included. Work was also directed toward understanding of the effects of attachments and cutouts in containment vessels on the plastic behavior and bursting strength of these structures. Progress during the period is reported on a literature review, and an analysis of openengs on plastic behavior of plates. In other work, design activities for an experimental investigation concerning the behavior of thin cylindrical shells with rigid caps when subjected to a series of incrementally increasing internal pressure is reported along with similar investigations concerning complete pressure vessels. Development effort on a containment handbook is also outlined. (J.R.D.).

Book Description
A computer program is being developed for the solution to propagation of stress waves generated in a onedimensional, homogeneous material subjected to an impulse loading. A stress sensor is being used for the determination of the unloading isentropes of balsa. The problem of explosive decompression of reactor coolant water is discussed. (R.J.S.).

Book Description
The development and design of reactor containment structures are studied. Information is given on: plastic deformation of membrane shells of revolution, a simplified shield-structure interaction problem, response of finite length cylinders to dynamic loads, the ultimate strength of a spherical gap with a rigidly reinforced opening, a theoretical study of the effect of circular openings on the plastic behavior of plates, bulging experiments on pressurized cylinders of finite length, and the development of a containment handbook for designers. (N.W.R.).
