Book Description
Excerpt from The First Three Years of Childhood Four years ago this book appeared to be a fortunate hit, offering as it did, though on the most simple scale, a study of infant psychology. The character of the work arose naturally from the line of study I had planned. I had, in fact, set myself to follow out in little children the gradual awakening of those faculties which constitute the psychic activity, so abundantly differentiated, so delicate and at the same time so powerful, of the adult human being. It was, no doubt, this intention - possibly a somewhat premature one - of systematizing a class of observations, of which hitherto only rough sketches had been attempted, which gained me the encouragement of philosophers and educationalists both in France and abroad. Thus then, while endeavoring to improve upon the modest beginning which had at first won me their sympathy, I could do no better than keep to my original method. My canvases were already sketched in and accepted: I have merely endeavored to draw them a little better and to fill them in more, to render facts and interpretations of facts clearer and more precise. Book Description
Excerpt from The Psychology of Childhood This book is written with a view to its use in normal schools. A course in general psychology is presupposed, since no space is devoted to the explanation of common psychological terms, though a glossary is added for easy reference. The authors are of opinion that the study of a special branch, such as child psychology, should follow rather than precede, or even accompany, a study of the more general science. It is intended for a textbook, not for reference reading. To this end special features have been employed, e.g. Mar gimal questions as well as topical headings, only limited references, sets of questions with each chapter. These last are of two distinct kinds, exercises and questions for discussion. The former consist of problems, queries to be answered in writing, directions for observations, field-work; the latter are suggested for oral use in the classroom. Either or both kinds are given for each chapter. They have been tested by use, and it is believed that greater value will be secured if they are utilized in the manner indicated. The references following each chapter are in no way supposed to be adequate indexes of source material; but they suggest what may reasonably be required of a group of students working with a good-sized library at command. Book Description
Excerpt from Children and Childhood Students of child study often have one great difficulty. It is, to see the subjects treated by Psychology, in the real gambols and sayings of living children. The difficulty has arisen partly because the earlier psychologists naturally studied mature minds, for they wished to see mental life in its completer forms; and so there were comparatively few studies made of children. But now, thanks to Professor Sully, M. Preyer, Professor Dewey, Professor Findlay, Mr. C. Burt, Dr. Freud, Dr. Montessori, and many other psychologists, teachers, and doctors, a solid body of knowledge about children has been created. We may reap two advantages. First, we can see perhaps more clearly than before which are the essential differences between a child and a full-grown person. Secondly, we must admit now that there are certain stages Of growth, and certain tendencies at each stage, which are common to most children. How can we arrange this knowledge so as to bring it closest to the children who sit in our classes, and shout and play outside? Perhaps by arranging the 'subjects' treated in Psychology books in connexion with the main stages of growth. For at certain times most of those main subjects are likely to become very marked. Thus we may keep closest to life; and to do so is the purpose of the arrangement of this book. But two things must be remembered. The first is that the arrangement of subjects under ages does not mean that the subject belongs only to that age. To hold such an idea would disqualify any one for child study for ever after. Book Description
Excerpt from Childhood and Character: An Introduction to the Study of the Religious Life of Children This book is an effort to introduce teachers to the study of childhood religion at first hand. Its aim is increase not so much of information as of insight, by thoughtful observation and control of children. It is in no sense a substitute for boys and girls as objects of study, and it should be used as a way of learning rather than as something to be learned - a guide to the real facts, which are living children, not books. For some time there has been a widely felt need for a book that will unite the study of children with the study of society. The social point of view in religion, in psychology, in attitude toward youth, has not so far given birth to a text for the guidance of teachers. Most current text-books are too abstract, too general, too little interested in problems of religious development, too individualistic in their point of view, or too crowded with facts of lesser importance. They leave the student with an idea of the dissected body and mind of "the child," but without a notion of children living in the fellowship of a social whole which includes them as well as adults. Young and old together constitute society. The youthful ingredient of society in the religious aspect of its development is the subject of this volume. The chapters are arranged in the order in which it is felt it will be most useful to read them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
