Excerpt from Studies in the Topography of Galloway: Being a List of Nearly 4000 Names of Places With Remarks on Their Origin and Meaning, and an Introductory Essay The collection of materials for the following pages was suggested some years ago by the perusal of an early edition of Dr. Joyce's Irish Names of Places. The identity apparent between many of the local names sifted and interpreted by that learned writer and those of Galloway, seemed to point to the possibility of some advance being achieved by the classification and comparison of all the names in that province. To any student who may in future approach the task more fully equipped with that knowledge of Celtic literature in which the present writer confesses himself - in limine - sadly imperfect, it may at least be serviceable to find nearly four thousand names of places alphabetically arranged.
