Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in the History of Mediaeval Science The history of European science in the Middle Ages is twofold. On the one hand it is concerned with the recovery and assimila tionof the science of antiquity, little known at first and only gradually brought into the West, to some extent as enlarged by the Arabs, in the course of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; While on the other hand, it has to take account of the advance of knowledge, by the processes of observation and experiment in western Europe. The first phase deals primarily With translation from the Arabic and the Greek, in Spain, Sicily, North Africa, and the East, as a preliminary to the full assimilation of these successive increments of ancient learning and the Arabic addi tions thereto. The second more obscure, has to trace the exten sion of knowledge by such means as the observation of plants and animals, especially dogs, hawks, and horses, the actual treatment of disease, geographical exploration, and the growth of the ex perimental habit. On both these sides a consecutive and com prehensive history still remains to be written, While at many points monographic investigation is entirely lacking. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in the History and Method of Science, Vol. 2 The first volume of this series appeared in the autumn of 1917. The editor was unable to see it through the press owing to his absence from England on military duty. A Preface was accordingly provided by Sir William Osler, who, unhappily, has not lived to see the growing success that has attended the ideas he expressed there with so much force, and towards which he contributed life-long thought and effort. The volume was received with an approval that far surpassed the hopes of its editor and the issue was rapidly exhausted. In the present collection an endeavour has been made to avoid some defects inevitable in the earlier volume. The undue prominence given to mediaeval studies will be found in part corrected and care has been taken to give more space to the evolution of the mathematical and exact sciences, though the balance is yet far from being fully redressed. Book Description
Excerpt from The Popes and Science: The History of the Papal Relations to Science During the Middle Ages and Down to Our Own Time Appendix VII by Rev. Father Leahy on The Fathers of The Church. And Science presents a controverted point of history to persuasion. Appendix IX shows how amusing and amazing was Professor Draper's lack of knowledge of the history of science and above all of medicine and surgery when he wrote his histories that were so Widely read and accepted because we in America knew no better for the moment. Book Description
First published in 2005, this encyclopedia demonstrates that the millennium from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance was a period of great intellectual and practical achievement and innovation. In Europe, the Islamic world, South and East Asia, and the Americas, individuals built on earlier achievements, introduced sometimes radical refinements and laid the foundations for modern development. Medieval Science, Technology, and Medicine details the whole scope of scientific knowledge in the medieval period in more than 300 A to Z entries. This comprehensive resource discusses the research, application of knowledge, cultural and technology exchanges, experimentation, and achievements in the many disciplines related to science and technology. It also looks at the relationship between medieval science and the traditions it supplanted. Written by a select group of international scholars, this reference work will be of great use to scholars, students, and general readers researching topics in many fields, including medieval studies, world history, history of science, history of technology, history of medicine, and cultural studies.
