Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Nature and Country Life Most of us, I believe, have far more chances of living with Nature and of trying to under stand the meaning and beauty of the world around us than we are at all able to profit by. We have eyes but we do not see, we have ears but we do not hear, and so we go through life, missing half the pleasures that have been pre pared for us, and understanding but a small part of what we do not miss. Let us therefore try to learn while we may, how to make good use of our time. The best way to begin is to go out into the country for a little while and look about us, and then, when we have remembered and thought over what we have seen, go again to find out if the things we notice are still there and look the same as they did before. Some of the ones we saw at first will have altered and new ones will have appeared. By going out at different times of the day and different seasons of the year we shall soon know what there is to be seen. This is the way in which artists and poets study the world, and find out a great deal more about it than most of us will ever do. They will not perhaps spend much time in the fields, but they will see a great deal, and remember some special part of what they have seen. They have this wonderful gift of observation. More over, they can afterwards tell us what they have seen, and can put down the meaning of it to them in colours or in words for us to study. Book Description
Excerpt from The Studies of Nature, to Which Are Added the Indian Cottage, and Paul and Virginia, Vol. 3 of 3: With a Memoir of the Author, and Notes Critical and Explanatory Fenelons, and many other illustrious men, who, in every country, have devoted their vigils to the welfare of their fellow-citizens. The only solid objection that can be al legad against me is my inability. But I have witnessed much injustice; I have myself been a victim of it. The images of disorder have excited in me ideas of order. Besides, my errors will serve to display the sagacity of those who shall correct them. If I present but one single useful idea to my prince, whose bounty has hitherto sup ported me, though my services have gone unrewarded, I shall obtain a recompense the most precious; if I may flatter myself with having dried the tears of some unhappy being, at the latest moment of life this recollection will wipe away my own. Book Description
Excerpt from Life in Nature It is just in this way we feel when we are relue tant to admit evidence which tends to demonstrate an identity between the organic world (that is, of plants and animals) and the rest of nature. When argu ments of this kind are suspected of a tendency to banish life from the world and interfere with the Creator's prerogative, it is surely forgotten that those forces and laws to which the phenomena of Vitality are thus referred, are to be judged of by their fruits, and not to be pronounced beforehand incapable of bearing them. To assume that we know what those laws and forces are, and are capable of doing, is arbitrarily to limit our own capacities. If the organic and the inorganic worlds in nature are two presenta tions to us of one thing, how much more penetrating and worthy may our knowledge become of both, each being interpreted to us by the other! Book Description
Excerpt from In the Acadian Land: Nature Studies Community with other villages. Only a distance of six miles through barren and brush, and meadow, past fringes of old woods, and swamps of spruce and maple, over ledges, two brooks and a river. A very commonplace stretch of new road, but in passing over it several thousand times, in all seasons and all weathers, it became more charming, more to be seen, and learned, and admired. It would be a pleasant employment for me to fill volumes with the unwritten diaries of these journeys. However, I cele brate them with this little book, in the hope some readers will become interested, and thereby life en larged and curiosity stimulated to know more of the wonderful world so easily accessible to all dwellers in the country, and that, too, without money and without.
