Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Midwifery IN preparing another edition of this work, the second hav ing been a long time out of print, I have endeavored to keep steadily in view the Object aimed at in the last edition, viz., while preserving one essential character of the work as a Student's Manual, to make it also a handy book for the busy practitioner. The main plan of the work remains the same; but much new matter has been added, chiefly Of a practical character, though some additions have also been made to the chapters on the anatomy and physiology of the parts con cerned. I have also added upwards Of sixty drawings, thereby, as I hope, enabling the student the more readily to understand some Of the more difficult points either in the theory or the practice Of Midwifery. Book Description
Excerpt from The Accoucheur's Vademecum, or Modern Guide to the Practice of Midwifery Really the author does not here speak from hyp0y thesis, for he has witnessed some very serious blun ders in the practice of Midwifery, evidently from the practitioner having adopted a partial code of notions capable of but limited application. In truth, it was the impression which such occurrences made on him that first led him to form a digest from various trust worthy authors of points but partially disposed of in books in common use. A hope that what he found of advantage to himself might prove beneficial to other practitioners has occasioned the present volume to appear in print. But it is unnecessary to enlarge further on this subject, for a cursory inspection will show that topics not afew are extensively treated of in the accoucheur's vadamecum, notwithstanding its limited price and size, which works on mid wifery of double its bulk, and far more than double its cost have either dismissed unnoticed, or in such a manner as to be productive of little satisfaction to the reader. Book Description
Excerpt from The Handbook for Midwives The Midwife will find in the following pages, described in familiar language, all the information necessary for a thorough understanding of so much of the art of midwifery as belongs to her. Technical words and phrases are added and explained, so that she may be able to understand the orders and remarks of the accoucheur, when his scientific assistance is required. A general anatomical sketch of the human body is given with an exact description of the parts concerned in the business of conception, pregnancy, and delivery. The progress of pregnancy and its signs, the management of natural labour, and of the lying-in state, are minutely detailed. The diseases and accidents peculiar to each condition, the signs and symptoms of unnatural labour, and the treatment, are fully described as far as the midwife requires for her guidance, and for the recognition of impending danger, demanding the attendance of the accoucheur.
