Pourtant comme le laissent supposer des études récentes en phonétique-phonologie, elle semble être l'une des unités de base de la parole. Il doit donc être possible de trouver des traces de son organisation dans les langues du monde. Les structures internes de la syllabe, ainsi que leur combinaison en unités lexicales, vont être analysées à travers l'étude d'une base de données composée de lexiques découpés en syllabes. L'élaboration d'une typologie, la mise en évidence de tendances générales et de lois implicationnelles, ainsi que la catégorisation des liens existants entre les différents constituants de la syllabe constitueront la majeure partie de cette étude. Mais bien que le travail de collecte et d'analyse de données soit nécessaire à une meilleure compréhension du fonctionnement du langage humain, il ne permet pas à lui seul de proposer des explications aux phénomènes observés. L'ensemble des résultats obtenus sont analysés à la lumière de travaux antérieurs pouvant fournir une base explicative des tendances, notamment ceux s'inscrivant dans le cadre d'une linguistique orientée substance, et plus particulièrement la théorie " Frame, then Conten "t (MacNeilage, 1998). Utilisant un paradigme expérimental original, nous montrons qu'il existe un corrélat perceptif de l'effet lexical Labial-Coronal. L'ensemble du travail apporte des éléments incontournables dans une perspective de modélisation de l'émergence des structures syllabiques et de la complexité des lexiques.

The syllable is a natural unit of organization in spoken language whose strongest cross-linguistic patterns are often explained in terms of a universal preference for the CV structure. Syllable patterns involving long sequences of consonants are both typologically rare and theoretically marginalized, with few approaches treating these as natural or unproblematic structures. This book is an investigation of the properties of languages with highly complex syllable patterns. The two aims are (i) to establish whether these languages share other linguistic features in common such that they constitute a distinct linguistic type, and (ii) to identify possible diachronic paths and natural mechanisms by which these patterns come about in the history of a language. These issues are investigated in a diversified sample of 100 languages, 25 of which have highly complex syllable patterns. Languages with highly complex syllable structure are characterized by a number of phonetic, phonological, and morphological features which serve to set them apart from languages with simpler syllable patterns. These include specific segmental and suprasegmental properties, a higher prevalence of vowel reduction processes with extreme outcomes, and higher average morpheme/word ratios. The results suggest that highly complex syllable structure is a linguistic type distinct from but sharing some characteristics with other proposed holistic phonological types, including stress-timed and consonantal languages. The results point to word stress and specific patterns of gestural organization as playing important roles in the diachronic development of these patterns out of simpler syllable structures.

Complexity approaches, developed in physics and biology for almost two decades, show today a huge potential for investigating challenging issues in Humanities and Cognitive Sciences and obviously in the study of language(s). Theoretical approaches that integrate self-organization, emergence, non linearity, adaptive systems, information theory, etc., have already been developed to provide a unifying framework that sheds new light on the duality between linguistic diversity on the one hand and unique cognitive capacity of language processing on the other hand. Nevertheless, most of the linguistics literature written in this framework focuses on the syntactic level addressed through computational complexity or performance optimization, while other linguistic components have been somewhat neglected. In this context, the proposed volume draws on an interdisciplinary sketch of the phonetics-phonology interface in the light of complexity. This book offers a comprehensive account of the phonological structure of modern Turkish within the framework of recent linguistic models. While phenomena at both the segmental and suprasegmental levels are discussed, the emphasis is on the latter, with analysis of phonological processes that extend over a number of different domains. Lower-level prosodic constituents, including syllables, feet, and prosodic words, are incorporated into a general theory alongside higher-level constituents - the phonological phrase and the intonational phrase - on the assumption that phonological structure is hierarchical in nature and that phonological representations consist of more than a single linear sequence of segments. The approach employed here draws on theories of both representation - Prosodic Phonology and Autosegmental Phonology - and computation, in the form of Optimality Theory. An overarching theme that emerges in every chapter is that not only regular but also apparently “exceptional” phonological forms demonstrate a systematic pattern, and that both can be captured by the same grammar. The volume provides a critical synthesis of research in Turkish phonology, as well as offering new analyses and data from a theoretically-oriented perspective.
