Book Description
The Symposium on Magnetic Ultrathin Films, Multilayers and Surfaces, hosted by the European Materials Research Society, was held at the Palais de la Musique et des Congré in Strasbourg, France on June 4-7, 1996. Its central theme was the relationship of magnetic properties and device performance to structure at the nano and micrometer length scale. Research on the magnetism of surfaces, ultrathin films and multilayers has increased dramatically during recent years. This development was triggered by the discovery of coupling between ferromagnetic layers across nonmagnetic spacer layers and of the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems of reduced dimension using various micro and nanofabrication techniques has become a subject of special interest. It is certainly the promising application potential of these effects in new magnetic recording device geometries which causes this intensive research, which is done both by companies and at universities and research institutes. A selection of invited and contributed papers presented at the Symposium and accepted for publication is contained in this volume. The contents of these proceedings are organized into seven sections. A. Nanowires, Nanoparticles, Nanostructuring B. Ultrathin Films and Surfaces, Characterization C. Giant Magnetoresistance D. Coupling, Tunneling E. Growth, Structure, Magnetism F. Growth, Structure, Magnetoresistance G. Coupling, Magnetic processes, Magneto-optics. The first four sections contain invited and oral contributed papers in the listed research domains, while the last three sections contain the contributions presented during three large poster sessions.

Book Description
Intermetallic thin films have tunable magnetic properties. The magnetic phases of intermetallic thin films were tuned by changing the alloy composition of the intermetallic system. L10 Fe50Pt50 thin film has high magnetic anisotropy which makes them ideal candidates for the thin film recording media. Magnetic phases of Fe50Pt50 can be tuned by the addition of third element like Mn by forming Fe50-x Mnx Pt50 ternary alloy system. In this work magnetic phases of ordered Fe rich Fe50-xMnxPt50 and Mn rich Fe50-xMnxPt50 thin films of Fe50-x Mnx Pt50 alloy system is investigated. Fe rich Fe50-xMnxPt50 thin films are epitaxially grown on a- Al2O3 and MgO (100) substrates, while Mn rich Fe50-xMnxPt50 thin films are grown on MgO (100) substrates. The change in the magnetic properties in Fe rich Fe50-xMnxPt50 thin films due to presence of tetragonal phase and the prediction of a the presence of a new low temperature phase in the Mn rich Fe50-xMnxPt50 thin films is verified. These intermetallic films are produced in a Ultra High Vacuum sputtering system with Reflective High Energy Electron Diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy. RHEED is used to verify epitaxy and Auger electron spectroscopy measures chemical composition.

Book Description
Macroscopic magnetic anisotropy is induced in the amorphous rare earthtransition metal alloys such as TB-Fe when they are prepared by vapor deposition processes. The role of the vapor deposition process in producing the structural anisotropy which underlies the magnetic anisotropy has been explored and results compared with proposed models. It was shown that the anisotropy is independent of the state of stress in the film during the growth, and does not depend on film thickness, results inconsistent with recently-proposed models. Most significantly, the anisotropy was shown to be induced by a thermally- activated growth process. This process was hypothesized to involve rearrangement of local adatom configurations into energetically-favorable orientations which minimize surface energy during growth, a process analogous to the frequently- observed crystallographic texturing of polycrystalline thin film. The anisotropy vanishes upon subsequent annealing of the films, emphasizing the critical role of the surface during growth.
