Book Description
Activities aimed at addressing the need for recruiting women and minorities in school administration are presented in this resource manual, which is a collective work of the Study Group on Women and Minorities sponsored by the National LEADership Network. Each section describes an interactive, adaptable activity that is aimed at policymakers and administrative staffs. The first activity focuses on how to obtain, use, and disseminate information to create a state demographic profile. The second activity aims to share information about several current recruitment programs and to help Leadership in Educational Administration Development (LEAD) directors plan for expanding recruitment efforts. Providing entry-level support is the purpose of the third activity, which is designed to create awareness and encourage the development of entry-level programs for women and minorities. The fourth activity examines the promotion of advancement opportunities for women and minorities: identifying barriers to advancement and determining strategies to overcome them, and valuing diversity in leadership styles. Activity 5 helps administrators create an action plan. Forty-three figures can be made into transparencies, and a list of resources accompanies each section. Appendices contain an article on access to the roles of school leadership, resolutions adopted by the National School Boards Association (NSBA) and American Association of School Administrators (AASA), LEAD Center directors/trainers resources, and training activity notes. (Contains 44 references.) (LMI)

Book Description
This volume addresses the role of chief diversity officers as coordinating and integrating diversity leaders in higher education and other sectors.Having established in a companion volume the parameters for an effective diversity strategy, the authors address such questions as: What is a chief diversity officer? How might we create dynamic chief diversity officer infrastructures? What models of CDO structure exist in the academy? What misperceptions often confound the work of officers and the institutions they work within? What key competencies are necessary to lead as a CDO? How does the CDO role compare across higher education, non-profit, and corporate sectors? And how might the role serve as an important contributor to a collaborative vision for change and transformation in the academy? This book begins by delineating the evolution of the chief diversity officer role in the academy. Drawing on extensive qualitative and quantitative research on CDOs conducted for the purposes of this volume, it describes how the scope and responsibilities are variously defined at the organizations where the position has been created, and offers insights into the complexities and challenges of the role.On the basis of this data and the literature on organizational design and change management, the authors define the requisite skills, knowledge and background to be effective, review the alternative organizational and governance structures under which CDOs operate, and in so doing present the Chief Diversity Officer Development Framework as a basis for recruiting candidates, for structuring the position to succeed, and for providing prospective and incumbent CDOs with a realistic sense of the scope of the role. This title is also available in a set with its companion volume, Strategic Diversity Leadership.

Book Description
In K-12 education, minority women leaders must navigate a complex maze of challenges that deeply impact their personal and professional lives. The journey of these leaders is marked by a series of starts and stops, demanding an extraordinary degree of resilience, mentorship, and leadership coaching. Despite the theoretical backing and organizational intent, the stark reality is that educational leadership roles for minority women often lack the necessary preparation and concerted efforts essential to supporting their unique needs. The resulting shortfall hampers their ability to sustain success over time. Minority Women in K-12 Education Leadership sheds light on the intersection of gender and ethnicity within educational leadership and addresses the various aspects of minority women's experiences. The objective of Minority Women in K-12 Education Leadership is clear—to provide readers, educational allies, educators, administrators, and stakeholders with a profound understanding of the intersections of gender, leadership, and ethnicity/color in educational leadership. This book goes beyond identifying challenges; it celebrates the resilience of minority women leaders, explores the support systems they rely on, and offers practical strategies for success. The content delves into the physical, mental, emotional, and social dimensions of their experiences, aiming to bridge theoretical and practical concepts and provide valuable insights for practitioners, scholars, and stakeholders.
