The aim of the following pages is to put into brief and convenient shape, without resorting to the higher mathematics, the discussion of the most important and common cases of horizontal beams under vertical loads. In beams Of rectangular cross-section the formulae given are exact under the assumptions generally made in regard to the laws of elasticity.
