Book Description
In response to concerns about invasive species issues in the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins, the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) began an invasive species initiative to better focus Center research efforts on this growing problem. To launch this initiative, Center management assembled a writing team with diverse expertise to draft a strategic plan to help guide Center research on invasive species. Before developing a final document, input was sought from potential partners to determine the relevancy of the proposed research areas identified in the strategic plan. To obtain this valuable partner input, a workshop was held on June 23, 2004, at the Radisson Hotel, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The workshop was attended by 25 representatives of Federal, state, and nongovernmental organizations and was facilitated by JFK Associates of La Crosse, Wisconsin. The purpose of the workshop was threefold: to present and obtain comments on the draft UMESC invasive species research strategic plan and to share our capabilities in this area with workshop participants ; to obtain input on the immediate regional research needs on invasive species ; to identify areas of overlap between our center strategic plan and partner priorities.

Book Description
Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest is an informative, colorful, comprehensive guide to invasive species that are currently endangering native habitats in the region. It will be an essential resource for land managers, nature lovers, property owners, farmers, landscapers, educators, botanists, foresters, and gardeners. Invasive plants are a growing threat to ecosystems everywhere. Often originating in distant climes, they spread to woodlands, wetlands, prairies, roadsides, and backyards that lack the biological controls which kept these plant populations in check in their homelands. Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest includes more than 250 color photos that will help anyone identify problem trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, sedges, and herbaceous plants (including aquatic invaders). The text offers further details of plant identification; manual, mechanical, biological, and chemical control techniques; information and advice about herbicides; and suggestions for related ecological restoration and community education efforts. Also included are literature references, a glossary, a matrix of existing and potential invasive species in the Upper Midwest, an index with both scientific and common plant names, advice on state agencies to contact with invasive plant questions, and other helpful resources. The information in this book has been carefully reviewed by staffs of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Endangered Resources and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum and other invasive plant experts.

Book Description
The Mesopotamian marshes are important for economic, social, and biodiversity values and have been home to indigenous human communities for millennia. They are regarded as a legendary site. This multi-authored book contains chapters written by world-renowned experts in their field. Both basic and applied information are made available, making the book a must-have for a wide spectrum of users. For example, an understanding of the natural and the social aspects of the marshes, as described here, is an obvious prerequisite for a pest management plan in this area. Scholars interested in wetlands can use this book as a guide to compare different wetlands areas in Asia. The bibliography section contains valuable references to the marsh areas and research in the field. This book serves as an up-to-date comprehensive source of information on different aspects of the southern marshes of Iraq and is aimed at academic scholars, environmentalists, and decision makers.
