In Being and Learning he offers an account of learning as an attunement with Beingâs dynamic presencing and unconcealment, which Duarte explores as the capacity to respond and attend to the matter that stands before us, or, in Arendtian terms, to love the world, and to be with others in this world. This book of âpoetic thinkingâ is a chronicle of Duarteâs ongoing exploration of the question of Being, a philosophical journey that has been guided primarily through a conversation with Heidegger, and which also includes the voices of Plato, Aristotle, Heraclitus, Nietzsche, as well Lao Tzu and the Buddha, among others. American Lonesome: The Work of Bruce Springsteen begins with a visit to the Jersey Shore and ends with a meditation on the international legacy of Springsteenâs writing, music, and performances. Gavin Cologne-Brookesâs innovative study of this popular musician and his position in American culture blends scholarship with personal reflection, providing both an academic examination of Springsteenâs work and a moving account of how it offers a way out of emotional solitude and the potential lonesomeness of modern life. Cologne-Brookes proposes that the American philosophical tradition of pragmatism, which assesses the value of ideas and arguments based on their practical applications, provides a lens for understanding the diversity of perspectives and emotions encountered in Springsteenâs songs and performances. Drawing on pragmatist philosophy from William James to Richard Rorty, Cologne-Brookes examines Springsteenâs formative environment and outsider psychology, arguing that the artistâs confessed tendency toward a self-reliant isolation creates a tension in his work between lonesomeness and community. He considers Springsteenâs portrayals of solitude in relation to classic and contemporary American writers, from Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Emily Dickinson to Richard Wright, Flannery OâConnor, and Joyce Carol Oates. Irish music enjoyed popularity across Europe and North America in the second half of the twentieth century. Regional circumstances created a unique reception for such music in the English Midlands. This book is a musical ethnography of Birmingham, 1950â2010. Initially establishing geographical and chronological parameters, the book cites Birminghamâs location at the hub of a road and communications network as key to the development of Irish music across a series of increasingly visible, public sites: Birminghamâs branch of Comhaltas CeoltĂłirĂ Ăireann was established in the domestic space of an amateur musician; Birminghamâs folk clubs encouraged a blend of Irish music with socialist politics, from which the Dublin singer Luke Kelly honed his trade; Irish solidarity was fostered in Birminghamâs churches. Each of these examples begins with a performance at Birmingham Town Hall in order to show how a single venue also provides musical representations that are mutable over time. The culmination is Birminghamâs St Patrickâs Parade. This, the largest Irish procession outside Dublin and New York, manifests an incoherent blend of sounds. The audio montage, nevertheless, creates a coherent metanarrative: one in which the local community has conquered a number of challenges (most especially that of the IRA bombings of the area) and has moved Irish music from private arenas to the centre of this large civic event.
