Book Description
Conjugates of Steroid Hormones focuses on the synthesis, isolation, assay, and metabolism of steroid conjugates. The book first offers information on the isolation of steroid conjugates and sulfates of steroid hormones. Topics include separation of steroid conjugates by adsorption, isolation from natural sources, group separation of sulfates and glucuronides, enzymic synthesis, and separation of steroid conjugates by solvent extraction. The manuscript then tackles glucuronides and glycosides of steroid hormones, as well as chemical synthesis and biosynthesis of diconjugates. The text ponders on phosphates of steroid hormones and metabolism of steroid conjugates. Discussions focus on the occurrence of steroid phosphates in biological fluids; metabolism of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate to estrogens; formation of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate; and estrogen conjugates. The publication is highly recommended for organic chemists and biochemists.

Book Description
This book represents a collaborative endeavor by a group of investigators to bring together in a single volume a critical discussion of the major facets of our knowledge, ranging from chemical to clinical aspects, of steroid conjugation. However, the important field of bile acid and bile alcohol conjugation has been discussed only superficially since it was decided arbitrarily to be outside the projected scope of the book. The reader is referred to the companion volume of this book, namely Physical Properties of Steroid Conjugates (by Bernstein, Dusza, and Joseph, Springer-Verlag New York 1968), for complemental information on individual conjugates. The Editors wish to thank Miss Elise Kramer for typing assistance. Also we wish to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to Mrs. Dorothy Budd, our copy-editor, and Mr. J. Joseph for their editorial assistance in making this book possible. SEYMOUR BERNSTEIN Pearl River, N. Y. January, 1970 SAMUEL SOLOMON V11 CONTENTS Preface . . . . Book Description
This is the story of steroid-protein interactions as one investigator sees it. Following the general concept of this monograph series, it emphasizes the results and interpretations obtained in the author's laboratory, and is therefore a subjective account. Recognizing, how ever, that the discussion of the subject would be incomplete if the material were limited to one scientist's work, the essential achieve ments of other investigators have been incorporated. An effort has thus been made to give a balanced presentation and to enable the reader to see in perspective the varied facets of the interactions between steroids and proteins. Since this is the first comprehensive treatment of the topic, it seems appropriate to go to the roots, and try to find out how it all started. The first chapters, therefore, take the reader to the laboratories of those who very early conceived the significance of the attachment of dyes, drugs, and other conspicuous molecules to those colloids called proteins. The discovery of the steroid hormones set the stage for meaningful investigation of their interaction with proteins of various origins and functions - a process which is continuing today with increasing vigor.

Book Description
An attempt has been made to attract contributions which illustrate the importance of certain enzymatic processes involved in steroid biosynthesis and metabolism and, in some cases, leading to steroidal action in target sites. Investigators actively engaged in research in such areas were invited to present their material in a manner which they considered fitting. It is hoped that as a result if this, the publication will possess sufficient depth to warrant approval. The blend of review material and experimental data originating in the author laboratories will, it is felt, make for useful reading.

Book Description
Advances in Biosciences 2 documents the proceedings of the Schering Symposium on Biodynamics and Mechanism of Action of Steroid Hormones held in Berlin, on 14-16 March 1968. The volume begins by presenting the opening address on the symposium's main themes followed by a lecture on the factors influencing the nature and significance of research in the biological sciences. The papers presented cover topics such as methods for automatic and semi-automatic assay of steroids; the combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry for the investigation of complex mixtures; factors controlling steroid hormone metabolism; and the metabolism of free and conjugated estrogens. Other studies deal with the molecular basis of estrogen-binding in target cells; early biochemical events in the mouse testis associated with ultimate induction of interstitial cell tumors by estrogens; biochemical features of androgens; and effects of corticosteroid administration on rats. This book also presents panel discussions on the clinical aspects, biodynamics, and action of steroid hormones.

Book Description
Metabolic Conjugation and Metabolic Hydrolysis, Volume III is a comprehensive account of the status of metabolic conjugation and metabolic hydrolysis. Topics covered range from the metabolism of steroid hormone conjugates and the genetic control of acid hydrolases to acetylation of drugs. Biochemical mechanisms in methyl group transfer are also discussed, along with the bilirubin conjugates of the human bile. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume first looks at the biosynthesis of animal glycoproteins before turning to an analysis of the metabolism of the conjugates of steroid hormones. The reader is then introduced to the genetic mechanisms that regulate acid hydrolases; control of metabolic hydrolysis in the lysosome-vacuolar apparatus; and the biochemical mechanisms underlying methyl group transfer. The final chapter is devoted to membrane phosphohydrolases, with emphasis on certain common features of membrane enzymes or of enzymes associated with membranes. Membrane transferases and hydrolases are also considered, including adenosine triphosphatase and adenyl cyclase. This book will be a useful resource for biologists, biochemists, physiologists, and pharmacologists.

Book Description
Steroids in the Laboratory and Clinical Practice covers both basic chemistry and therapeutic application of steroids in a single source. The comprehensive reference addresses the specificity of steroid determinations to clarify confusion arising from the laboratory results. The book covers important advancements in the field and is a valuable addition in the literature addressing all existing knowledge gaps. This is a must have reference for pathologists, laboratorians, endocrinologists, analytical/clinical chemists and biochemists. - Addresses the normal production of steroids and concentrations found in biological fluids and tissues - Presents the changes in steroid concentrations at life events as reference points for clinical investigations - Reviews the genetic disorders of steroids in relation to specific enzyme changes and clinical presentation
