Sterile services continue to be influenced by changes in medical and nursing procedures, technological developments and more recently the need to meet the standards required in the preparation and production of sterile products. This note distils the accumulated experience of the service and provides a framework which should enable project teams to analyse their local needs. The note suggests a strategy for the provision of sterile services, workflow patterns and a methodology for calculating the workload and throughout capacity, all of which should assist in the analysis, sizing and designing of an SSD.
